Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
The Clare Byrne Show on Newstalk. With Aviva Insurance.
Along with the good weather, though, comes holiday planning and nearly all airlines now are charging for check-in bags. So the art of packing for a weekend away is something worth giving thought to. So we're going to find out how to do it properly now with Aoife Doonigan, the Stylebob. Hello. Good morning. You have this down to an art form, I know. I can do it in 7kg, believe it or not.
Chapter 2: What should you consider when planning a city break?
So listen, I saw you, you've done the video. So what you wear to the airport, what you wear on the plane, even that's working for you. That is one of my three rules. So yes, with the city break, for example, there's lots of things that you can do between sightseeing, having drinks, shopping. So you have to maximise that airport outfit.
So obviously, I always say to have two items at the airport that you wear again, because sometimes I'm at the airport and I see people in these lovely, beautiful cream coordinates. But I mean, cream for the rest of the trip is a disaster. So for me, my actually, I had three items on the way over. A pair of jeans, because, of course, you can wear it day to night.
Jeans don't, you know, don't stain. A blazer that I can actually, a very light layer, I can wear it also at night time and my trainers. But you have to maximise that airport outfit. That's definitely one of my number one rules. Stuff that I don't generally wear in my life. Like a fluffy pink cardigan. Listen, I think that I'm going away.
So I'm going to be a completely different person when I get there and I'm going to wear all different stuff and I end up with nothing to wear. I know. Well, I was once in Wexford and I dressed as if somebody was going to ask me out to some yacht in Saint-Tropez. Yeah, it didn't happen, did it? But then I start creating outfits.
And the biggest thing to create an outfit is don't start packing all this colour, right? Because if you pack lots of colour, like I'm here wearing a red jacket today, I'd be sick of that on day three on my trip, right? That's not coming with you. That was at the side of the bag last week. And I said, you know, we have to say we can't bring it on the trip.
So I plan, I have my big bunch of clothes there. I pan the outfits. I pick a palette. navy grey or black, just happens to be my palette. I could do cream this time of the year. And then I will bring in all my colour through my trainers and through my scarves.

Chapter 3: How can you maximize your airport outfit for travel?
And I'm just obviously back from Paris. And of course, scarves are having a moment again. You know, people, all these people talk about Hermes scarves and, you know, your old mother silk scarves. They're now very chic again. Not that they were never chic, but the young girls in Paris were all wearing them. So I took two scarves with me. I had the same laser for two days.
And I changed up my look completely with two very light items in the bag. But by having that palette of a simple palette, colour through scarves, accessories or trainers, I bring a colour trainer. And then at night time, because I picked a navy blazer, we were going to the opera that night. So I put my blazer over my shoulder and it was, you know, it went with everything.
Now, so, you know, now if my husband was here, he'd say, you're not always like that. I wasn't. But the biggest thing is, You have to leave room for shopping. I once went away with my friends with a small six, seven kg boasting at the airport. I went shopping there and I had about three, three cardigans on my on my shoulders.
You know, if you're there to wear all the things, I wear all those back. I was very hot on the plane. Not a good look. And but the thing is that if you start bringing lots of colour but there's lots of fun ways to bring colour if that's your thing.
So I see what you're saying so you've got your palette you do your minimal clothing and then your colour comes from your accessories and if you fancy wearing a scarf then they're very in at the moment. What about shoes? How many pairs of shoes are we allowed to bring? Okay, well, I brought for my three days in Paris, I bought three.
So a trainer, you know, the first thing you do when you're going anywhere, you know, you look at the forecast and I looked at the forecast and it was going to be dry, so I didn't need to bring the raincoat. But your trainer, an absolute must in the city. And then what I liked for night was a kitten heel shoe. That was the other one.
And then I brought a nice little ballet flat only because I was going in and out of shops and I just needed to look nice for the work that I do. But to be honest, I could have probably survived just on the training. On the two pairs of shoes. If I had to. And the shoe I took was a black patent shoe. It goes with everything.
And also what I realised, and you probably saw the video, didn't I bring this evening bag, right? That was actually like a very fancy evening bag, but it's all fabric. But I stuffed actually about three kg into it on the way over. And then when I was walking to the opera, I had the runners in the bag and then I changed into the shoes. And I said, God, this is great. My evening bag is doubling up.
So there's lots of ways. And to be honest, you know, if you are told you can have a 20 kg or 15 kg, you fill it full of crap. That you don't need. That you actually don't wear. And if all goes to all, if you forget something, Clare, you can buy. You can pick it up. And the layers then, you mentioned there that you keep it sort of light with the layers. Yeah, all light layers.

Chapter 4: What are the essential items to pack for a weekend getaway?
A low profile runner especially. Isn't that what we call them? Yes, an elegant sneaker. That's what we call it. And there's lots of places to get that. But or else what I did at the weekend, too, is I had a T-shirt and I felt it was, you know, I changed it out for I love. I'm a big fan, by the way, of under your blazer, a little decorative knit.
So let's just say, Claire, someone says to you at 5 p.m., let's go for cocktails. You take off your online blazer and underneath you might have a knit with a little puff sleeve. So you don't even need to go back to it. And then you put your scarf on and you've got a bit of colour. And then a little bit of lip slick. So you know what? It's totally possible. It really is.
And what I say as well when I'm shopping, if I see something that I feel is a great neutral, I say to myself, is that worthy of my 10 kg? And if it's worthy for something I'll pack time and time again, like a grey knit. I love a grey knit because grey takes colour. I justify myself by it.
I remember when I was a teenager, somebody saying to me, an older woman, that you should never wear grey close to your face. Did you ever hear that? No. And you don't think it's true, obviously, by the look on your face? To be honest, you know what?
Chapter 5: How do you create versatile outfits for travel?
A lot of people associate grey with their school uniform. I think grey, again, grey takes colour very well. You can put the scarf on. So when I do wear grey, in fairness to that lady, my lipstick can't be a nude. I'll have to put a bit of effort in. Go with it brighter. Yeah. So listen, what I've learned from this is prep is key.
So you have to, you can pack light and it can be successful, but you have to plan it properly. So you need to spend a bit of time beforehand. Is that right? And think outfits, not pieces. If it's not going into an outfit, it doesn't go into the bag. Okay. Well, Aoife, thank you very much. No pressure. No pressure at all. Thank you so much. And you can find Aoife on Instagram.
