Okay. So, uh, Manny Malhotra, uh, unveiled on Thursday as the newest head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
Chapter 4: What communication style does Manny Malhotra emphasize as a coach?
They made it official a couple of days ago, but with Ryan Johnson away at the Combine, delayed the press conference a couple of days, and Manny spoke to the media. Now, you were there in person. I was not able to be there in person, but I followed along remotely.
So being in the room, first of all, I want to get your impressions of how Manny came across in his introductory press conference as the new head coach of the Canucks.
Yeah, first impressions are, you know, very much in line with what we thought about Ryan Johnson and Sedins. This is a very polished individual, Emmanuel Hothra, going back to his playing days, Batch, and you covered him. You've covered him as a player and a coach.
Chapter 5: How does Manny plan to handle player development during the rebuild?
So just to understand, you know, he's got, he's very well-spoken. He's very, I think he can express himself in a very strong way and a very,
clear way which is something that is very in line with ryan johnson so my first impressions were very good communicator uh knows what he wants to express and how he wants to express it and i thought even the tougher questions that were thrown his way there was not much delaying there was not much you know talking around the issue it was a measured a very
cerebral in a good way where he wasn't surprised by a question and I thought you know that's the way he spoke but what his substance was as well like these were things that he has thought about obviously in the the interview I thought some of his talking points which we'll get to in a minute here as we talk about Manny Malhotra I just overall he was prepared organized and those are two of the words that we hear about him as a coach as well so not really surprised on that front
Yeah, and you know, I think that's what a modern coach in the NHL needs to be as well, right? You need to be a clear communicator. You need to be able to explain your ideas and philosophies and get buy-in from the players on your roster. And based on the culture that he helped cultivate in Abbotsford on their run to the Calder Cup last season.
Chapter 6: What is the significance of Manny Malhotra's heritage as a head coach?
But, you know, even this past year, continuing that culture, and he talked about that, which I thought was interesting, which was, you know, it might not have showed up in terms of results because of a variety of factors out of their control, like injuries and guys being up at the NHL level that maybe they wouldn't have expected from
going into the year that he still felt that player development went in the right direction and guys were growing in Abbotsford. And that comes to one thing that he really talked about a lot, which was the process. And we're going to talk a lot about the process over the next few years, because as this team goes through this rebuild, results are not something that we're expecting them to get a
But also, it's not what they're going to be focused on in the short term. They've got a lot of young players. They're going to add some more young players later this month at the draft.
Chapter 7: How can Manny Malhotra unlock Elias Pettersson's potential?
It's about growing and developing those guys and setting a process in place that will serve them well when they get to a point where the results are going to matter. And I thought the way Manny sort of explained his mindset and philosophy around how he's going to approach that going forward was pretty good.
Yeah, absolutely. And I think there is, you know, a thought that, hey, you have to do things the right way. There is a process, but also enjoying the process.
Chapter 8: What are the potential assistant coaching options for Manny Malhotra?
Manny, I think, expressed it pretty well at the press conference, but even going back, I did an interview with him nine years ago, Bach, and one of the things he mentioned was players, young players, you know, you have to fall in love with the process.
And at that time he was a pretty young coach himself, but what he talked about at the press conference was very much in that of, we got to help build professional hockey players. There's a process you follow. You got to do the hard work, but at the same time, fall in love with the work because when you do, the game itself is going to be easier.
You know, get lost in those details and enjoy those details. I thought that's a very interesting mindset, especially for a rebuilding team. When you don't have a rebuilding atmosphere, you know, getting, you know, falling in love with the process is not necessarily something that is communicated because you're saying, hey, we're trying to win right now.
When you have the luxury of time, you have the luxury of a rebuild, you can help to program some of these younger players and maybe some of these veterans to say, yes, we want to win games, of course, but that's not the focus. We want to build you up to be the best player possible. And by doing that, by following this process, by getting, you know, really enjoying this process, uh,
you can help to ideally build winners. And I think that's the real key here with Manny is that he's got to, in a lot of ways, maybe program some of these younger players to think slightly differently now that this team is rebuilding and also some of those veterans as well.
Yeah, and I thought one of his strongest moments at the presser was talking about, and it was right at the end of the presser, where he was asked about trying to inspire a group that's gone through some tough times here and how to keep people positive when you might be losing or not getting the results that you want. And he talked about just grabbing onto the fact that you're playing in the NHL.
And that being enough to get you out of bed in the morning and have you excited to come to the rink, the opportunity to play in the NHL. And, you know, that's a message that might not reach a veteran team. Right. Like for guys that have played in the NHL for a decade that are trying to succeed, that, you know, have expectations of results.
you know, the, hey, we're just happy to be here mentality might not make a lot of sense. But for this team, with the young players that they have, the young players that they're going to add, the way this roster is going to be constructed, I think that's the perfect message for a team that's going to grow is, look, are we going to win every night? Certainly not.
Are we going to be in tough a lot of nights? Absolutely. But we get to play in the NHL, and we get to be a part of this process that most other people ā don't get to be a part of, but would love to be a part of, right? Like how many kids across Canada and the U.S. and across the world dream of playing in the NHL when they grow up? Well, you're getting to do it.
