Chapter 2: How will young players like Kirill Kudryavtsev fit into the Canucks' rebuild?
He is our guy, Brendan Batchelor. Batch, what's going on, buddy? Not too much. Just giving you a heads up, I'm going to need a hydration break during this hit. Well, it's going to be pretty hot over the weekend here. So, I mean, I think that's good for all of us to keep in mind, Batch, is hydrate.
Hydrate when we're out and about this weekend. I just had a sip of water. There you go. Thanks for the reminder, Batch. You're welcome. There you go.
Public service announcement. Everyone, take a minute, grab some water right now, especially if you're playing soccer.
Having fun this weekend and out and about, make sure to mix in a water.
Chapter 3: What adjustments are being made in the Stanley Cup Final?
Yes. Very good advice, Batch.
All right. So in addition to the World Cup going on, right, we're still focused on the Canucks making news or the fact that they have made a lot of news this spring. And of course, Manny Malhotra officially introduced last week as the Canucks new head coach. And, you know, there's a lot of different angles, interesting angles to take with this one batch.
But I think one thing a lot of people are curious about is. We saw the struggles for some young players to earn opportunities and ice time under Adam Foote last season. Obviously, the focus is going to be very different for Manny Malhotra.
Is there a player, one player in particular that you look at and think, I'm really curious to see what this player's opportunity and performance looks like with Malhotra as the new coach behind the bench?
Well, the name that immediately jumps to mind is Atu Ratu. And the reason for that, I think, is twofold. One, because he played under Manny in Abbotsford and had some success at that level. But also because he showed well at the World Championships with Finland.
And we know, and I believe this was you, Drancer, that reported this, that there had been some friction with the previous regime, particularly between Alvin and Foote,

Chapter 4: What lessons can other teams learn from the Stanley Cup contenders?
over prioritizing playing young players as opposed to, you know, trying to win games and playing veterans. And yeah, I can confirm that that happened. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
I think, well, was it not you that reported it?
Yeah.
But I'm saying, I'm saying like, I'll, I'll, as you were describing it, I just wanted to put my hand up and be like, yes, what batch is describing is, is I'll vouch for that. We can attribute that to me.
Yes. Okay. So yeah, That lack of alignment is no longer there. In fact, if there's one thing that I think we can be pretty confident is there within the Canucks front office and coaching staff, there is full alignment, which means that, you know, obviously they're working through this rebuild. They're going to prioritize giving young guys opportunities.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of Darnell Nurse's trade request?
And, you know, for a guy like Atu Ratu, who I think is capable of playing a more effective role than he has to this point or a more effective role than he was afforded. under Adam Foote.
You know, he stands out to me as a guy that has the greatest opportunity to play a bit more and to have more trust from the head coach to be given more opportunities and not to be demoted or pulled from the lineup with the regularity that we saw last season.
Can I give you another suggestion, Batch? Yeah, sure. Kirill Kudraevsev.
Hmm. That's I love that as an idea. And ultimately, we'll have to see how the roster takes shape over the rest of the offseason. But I've said this for a long time. Carol Kudryavtsev has impressed me every time I get to watch him play.
And, you know, obviously during the season, I don't watch the Abbotsford Canucks a ton because I'm too busy watching the Vancouver Canucks and doing my job in that regard. But I can remember the first time I saw Kirill Kudryadsev at the Young Stars after I had gotten through how to say his name.
um, you know, realizing that this kid was a seventh round pick, but came in and looked pretty good right away. And then every passing year, he'd be at the young stars again, and he'd look a little bit better and a little bit better.

Chapter 6: Which teams are potential landing spots for Darnell Nurse?
And then, um, you know, jumping into the AHL and playing well, and then getting NHL games and looking comfortable in that role too. So, um, yeah,
As the process of the rebuild continues forward, I think you have to be willing to give all sorts of young players opportunities and not just be willing to say, oh, we've got a lot of young defensemen, we'll be fine, because you never know how each one of those young defensemen changes. is or isn't going to pan out.
And if you have someone like Kirill Kudryavtsev, who would essentially be found money as a pick late in the draft to come in and play with regularity at the NHL level for you, then that would be great. And I think to this point in his career, I've seen nothing from him that makes me doubt his ability to do just that.
As we look ahead to the summer, I mean, all of a sudden here, we're what, like three weeks away from July 1st batch and obviously the draft will pass. And then, you know, we'll really see Ryan Johnson's opportunity to put his stamp on this roster.
Are you more interested in the additions side of things and who they may be targeting trades or bringing in free agency or the departure side to see who is no longer on the team come training camp next year?
I think for me, it has to be departures. because I'm very interested and I don't think we have a clear picture of how aggressive they might be in terms of moving some of the veteran guys with term on their contract out.
And I know, Drance, you kind of tried to draw it out of him a little bit in your interview with him, but he wasn't really biting in terms of firmly committing to what that's going to look like. So, you know, there's been a lot of talking over the past few weeks with the Sedins and Ryan Johnson being hired and Manny Malhotra. Pretty soon we're going to get into not just talking, but doing.

Chapter 7: How are the Canucks handling their veteran players during the rebuild?
And I think the actions are going to speak louder about
than you know what what we've heard thus far although i've been very low bar low bar they've been very guarded in terms of sharing plans right i mean i i don't think we really have a sense of the philosophy yet aside from we're really committed to being patient yes and and i think and you know correct me if you think i'm wrong or you disagree with me i think
who they move out is going to be a greater indication of how aggressive that philosophy is going to be as opposed to who they bring in. Right. Like if we're smart talking in September and Jake DeBrusque is gone and Philip Heronix gone and Elias Pettersson's gone, then that's very, very aggressive.
Conversely, at the opposite end of that spectrum, there's a world where all three of those guys are in training camp. Right. So like to me, That side of things is going to be much more telling than the side of things about like, oh, are they going to sign Brendan Gallagher or are they going to, you know, use use cap space to overpay veteran players to bring in character?
Like, I think it's more more indicative. It'll be more reflective of what we can expect from the process going forward to see how aggressive they are in moving guys out.
Yeah, I think it's a good point. What do you think about my take, by the way, that they should be urgent or they should urgently be seeking to do some level of dismantling over the course of the summer? Because as much as these three gentlemen might be, you know, I mean, management, not Malhotra. So four gentlemen, I'll lump him in.

Chapter 8: What are the latest developments in the Canucks' management strategy?
Why not? As much as they're talking about being patient, the reality of this organization is demonstrated time and time again is that, you know, the runway might not be as long as they may be expected to be at this juncture.
Yeah, it's hard to say because I totally get what you're saying about, you know, being aggressive and making those moves right away. That said, I think when you're talking about the level of impact of some of the potential moves we're talking about, like trading an Elias Pettersson or trading a Philip Hironik.
I don't think you can just rush those things if you don't think the right deal is there. And because you're going through a rebuild, because you have been you know, given time to go through this process. And because, you know, RJ has talked so much about being patient as he did with you in your piece at The Athletic today. I think patience is important.
What I think is more important than patience may be is understanding when you have to stop being patient and start being more aggressive. And how they walk that line is going to be really interesting. I don't think that's an easy thing to manage. But I'm not going to sit here and say that the offseason's a failure if they don't move all three of those guys out by training camp.
I think all three of those moves in and of themselves would be complicated things that you have to make sure you get right and you can't just...
rush into um but if you begin that process this offseason if you move one of those three guys i think that's probably a step in the right direction now ultimately we'll wait and see if if that's the direction they want to go or not or if they don't feel that same level of urgency to do it right now that you're suggesting and ultimately you know if if we take the organization at its word that they are going to take their time and be patient and do this the right way
then you shouldn't feel that urgency because a rebuild is a long process. And, you know, for all three of those guys, their value could potentially be higher if you wait, especially with DeBrusque and Pettersson, I think, more so than Hronik. But that said, you know, we also know, as you pointed out, that that patience and that willingness to
look at the process from a long-term view has not been something that we've seen from the organization in the past. So the big question and ultimately that's another thing that's going to be answered over time rather than in the short term is how really committed are they to this rebuild and to seeing it through the right way.
Batch, we're watching a pretty fantastic Stanley Cup final between Carolina and Vegas. And, you know, it's interesting because two teams built very differently, very different MOs from their front offices.
