Chapter 2: Which 2011 Canucks players might join the team in new roles?
He needs to know that something is happening or else he starts crazy rumors to the contrary. I know this is all your fault, Dom. I still am not panicked about anything going on with Malhotra. One of the things I think that's going on in Vancouver is they have a lot happening. They have some positions to fill, some business to do.
And I think that has affected some of these decisions, not in terms of them happening, but the timelines of it. So I'm not concerned about. about the Malhotra situation as it stands right now. I still think as we sit here on Thursday night recording this pod, I still think that things are moving in the proper direction.
That's Elliot Friedman on 32 Thoughts today and giving a shout-out slash slandering producer Tom Schramatti. And I'll admit, because Elliot said, you know, I'm not as concerned as some people are. I don't know that I ever officially got concerned.
I did say at the beginning of this process, Josh, that after my show yesterday, so at 2 o'clock of yesterday, if we hadn't heard any news, that I might start to get a little concerned. we have this update from Elliot. Exactly. I appreciate this update because it's not just, well, they're negotiating.
There's actually a little bit of reporting buried inside there, which is that, first of all, everything's fine. It's moving in the right direction. And specifically... They've got a lot of other things to do, right? They've got to hire assistant coaches. If they hire Manny Mahotra, they'll need to hire an AHL coach.
They need to hire an AHL GM, maybe another assistant general manager, and maybe some of that other business is slowing things down. So I want to officially declare my concern level. If it spiked at all, it's back down to zero, courtesy of Elliot Freeman. Down to zero? Zero. Okay, that's good. Well, where's yours?
I mean, like, maybe a two.
Oh, come on. Your classic Josh flying off the handle.
Then people riled up. No, I did think, like, if we got to this Friday, I would be concerned, you know, just because it's like, man, it's kind of taking a while. But it does feel very calm. And like Elliot said there, it's like they're still negotiating. And to your point, there are a lot of positions to fill. I mean, essentially, you're kind of poaching the whole Abbotsford staff. Yes.

Chapter 3: What high-character veterans should the Canucks consider adding?
They're going to get this done. As you said, if it goes another week, that'd be pretty weird. And I'd start to have some questions about exactly what was going on. But I am pretty confident that by this time next week, we will be talking officially about Manny Malhotra as the next head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
Now, as you pointed out, they've got a lot of work to do since so many Abbotsford people potentially jumping up to join the Vancouver Canucks. Also worth noting, They raided their own development staff to promote the Sedins, who of course were working in player development and doing a lot of work with the Abbotsford Canucks, to the co-presidents of hockey operations.
On that point, a report out of Sweden this morning that former Canuck defenseman, and of course longtime teammate of the Sedins, Alex Edler, Looks like he could be joining the Canucks, maybe in a player development role, or at the very least, in a role at the summer development camp. Just hanging out for the summer. Yeah, well, maybe.
Maybe it's like, hey, come for the dev camp and see what you think.
See how you like it, right?
See if it's your kind of thing, if it's your speed. So another... 2011 Vancouver Canucks, and of course, Edler's career spanned a lot more years than that, but that's the year we all think of, right, of that version of the Vancouver Canucks. So right now, Josh, we've got the Sedins, Copojos. Manny Malhotra in line to be the coach. Now, I won't include Ryan Johnson.
Of course, he wasn't on that team, but he had just recently left that team. Matias Samuelsson already in player development from that team. Mikael Samuelsson. Whatever. Oh, sorry.
Yeah, you're right.
I'm thinking of his for Buffalo. Yeah. My bad. You're right. Wow, that was a horrible mistake for me to make. Anyway, Samuelsson in player development. Now maybe Alex Edler in player development as well. How many... 2011 players, can we get involved? You know the meme, like, slaps hood? This thing can fit so many 2011 players on it. That's what the Sedins are doing with the Canucks.

Alex Burrows, he's gone on and he's had a pretty decent coaching player development career. Manny Malhotra, we'll see what he does. But even in the media, Corey Schneider, Kevin Bieksa, all these guys are actually... Roberto Luongo. Everyone from that team has actually gone on and had a level of... having a role post-career.
It doesn't feel like we're forcing it to a crazy extent if they were to bring everyone back. Keith Ballard coaches in the Beauty League. Right. That translates. It all works out. I do think there is a level of... You do need some outside voices. You need some non-familiar voices.
But at the same time, so far, every, you know, quote-unquote 2011 hire has actually, like, you can make the case that that's the right person for the job.
And as you said, it's not like you look at that 2011 team, a lot of them are already working in high-profile or impressive positions, right? And, I mean, you mentioned Biexa and Luongo and Corey Schneider, and I said Tanner Glass, Jeff Tambolini, Alex Burrows has been doing that as well. Like...
It's not as if you're just like, oh, hey, you've been sitting on the couch for 15 years, but hey, come on, come on, join the organization, right? Like, these people are doing things. And I don't have an issue. Look, can it get to a point where it's overkill? Yes, of course it could. And I get it, and I know that there is a sentiment of we need to move on as a city from 2011. I understand that.

But, you know, he hasn't been doing it, so he'd have to go through that process. They should just bring Chris Tannit back to play. Well, that's the thing.
They're, like, one of the only guys, or maybe the only guy left on that team who's still playing. Absolutely. Aaron Volpatti, I had to mention, he's releasing music now, so he could be the DJ. Right. Get him in-house.

We're covering so many bases.
It's all coming together via 2011. More on potential additions to the front office in just a second here, but I do want to touch on the Stanley Cup playoffs in the headlines because tonight. In Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes have a chance to advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in, what, 20 years? 21 years? What, 2005? 2006. Yeah, 2006.
Of course, there was no Stanley Cup in 2005. This is over, right? I think so. Montreal feels so depleted.

Chapter 6: How do the 2011 Canucks influence the current team culture?
Like, great season for Montreal no matter what happens tonight. They are just so up against it. Like, I can't remember the last time I felt like a team was this dead in the water going into an elimination game.
Yeah, I just don't see, like, there's a world where I'm like, okay, they could win tonight. I don't see them winning three in a row, you know? And it does feel like there is the aspect of Carolina being like, man, we have waited so long to get over this hump. Yes. We are not going to take our foot off the gas at all. So I do look at this, and it is a crazy uphill battle. But you're right.
Montreal had a good season. I don't think there are going to be these big takeaways like we're kind of having about Colorado right now. If they do get eliminated tonight, it's just, hey, it's a good season. Build on it. It's fine.
This is part of the process. First long playoff run for a young team. You had two really tough series. You ran into a buzzsaw. Nobody should be skeptical about the future of the Habs as a result of this. It's all part... of the learning process. Uh, all right to the broad sheet now, and we already played the clip from Elliot Friedman about suggesting that, um,
Other business the Canucks are working on might be slowing things down when it comes to Manny Malhotra. Rick Dollywall, when he wasn't ranting and yelling about the CFL and DAZN on Halford and Brough, also had some information or some tidbits to pass along about what's going on with the Vancouver Canucks.
And the most interesting one for me was in the course of his reporting and saying, you know, management's been working all week with Manny Malhotra on this, both the Sedins and Ryan Johnson. to keep an eye on the addition of an assistant general manager early next week as well.
And, of course, even with Emily Castonguay and Kami Granato retained by the organization by promoting Ryan Johnson, they created a vacancy for an assistant general manager. I'll be curious to see... if this is an AGM who also runs Abbotsford, or if it's a different profile altogether. Because not every NHL organization uses that setup.
Some people just have, hey, you're the GM of the Abbotsford Canucks. For a while, I mean, Ryan Johnson was just the GM of the Abbotsford Canucks. But you're not an assistant general manager. Because when you really look at it, with Ryan Johnson moving up, and even with Cammy Granato, who's done most of her work in scouting and player personnel,
They've got those bases kind of covered in the front office. So I don't know if it makes sense to, you know, I was using the Tanner Glass example, director of player development to AGM or GM of the Abbotsford Canucks. That's kind of a pretty typical career path, but I think they have that skill set covered. And so I almost wonder if there's two hires here.

Chapter 7: What roles are available in the Canucks' front office and development team?
I don't have a problem with any of those guys. I love all three of those guys. The Brendan Gallagher one, to me, is the most interesting of all. Just because, like, is there a chance? And I don't know that they would. I haven't studied Montreal's cap situation in depth enough. Is there a chance that you could actually get an asset to take Brendan Gallagher from Montreal?
Because just for that reason is the one that potentially interests me the most. Troy Stetcher and Luke Shen, though, no chance. No issue with either of them. Both awesome guys, awesome teammates can fill a role for this team.
You know, kind of on the back of the 2011 conversation, I will say, and maybe this is just because, you know, Dollywell's doing the same process you and I do where we just kind of think of guys with connections, but I have no problem casting a wider net as well. Like there are other good character people that aren't former Canucks or from the lower mainland. Those are great boxes to check.
Don't get me wrong, especially the local guy angle. I love that. But don't be shy, right? Just go find good character wherever you can find it.
It can be a similar situation to, like, when you brought in Ian Cole. And now, obviously, Ian Cole is another name that would be out there. But, like, someone like him.
That's a good point. Like, no prior connection, but he was awesome. Yeah. He was great for the room.
He apparently really kept the room together. Yeah. And so if you can find someone, ideally multiple guys like that ā Yes, if they have some sort of BC connection. I think that helps. I think writing the wrong of Troy Stetcher, I guess, would do a lot for fans. And maybe the call from the Sedins being like, hey, we want you to come back would get them back.
But, yeah, I have no issue with who they bring in as long as it's with the, hey, this is a high character person in mind.
I guess the other angle with the local connection that does make it, you know, make a little bit more sense other than just that it's a nice story is ā you've got to think what is going to draw this person to the Canucks, to a last-place team that's going into a rebuild, and maybe it's the local connection that does that from the player's perspective.
