Chapter 1: What recent developments are shaping the Canucks GM search?
So,
Hey, what's up? Welcome to Canucks talk here on Sportsnet 650. It's Jamie Dodd and my co-host Thomas Drance. Drance, of course, covers. The Canucks for the Athletic as well. We're broadcasting live from the Kintec studio. Step strong with orthotics and footwear from Kintec. 650-650 is the Dunbar Lumber text line. This hour of the show is presented by Waffle House Diner.
Enjoy chicken and waffles, the Waffle House Special Classic Full Breakfast, and more... Dine-in or order on your favorite delivery app. Breakfast done right. Big show on a big day here for the Canucks. Of course, it is draft lottery day, which we'll talk about at some point. I want to do a real draft lottery, by the way, on the show.
Not like these other shows that are so lazy and they just go to Tankathon or whatever and press the button. We're going to draw. We're going to draw the random numbers. I've got the combinations. We're going to go through the whole process so we get a feel for how it's going to go later today. We'll do that at some point. Yannick Hansen's going to join us.
Kevin Woodley's going to join us as well. And Drance, what a 24 hours it's been. What a 24 hours. Just in the last five hours or so, the amount of reporting and developments and whatever you want to call it around the Canucks GM search has been dizzying.
Yeah, so I basically repackaged for the notebook at The Athletic what we talked about on the show yesterday, but with a little bit more analysis because the more I looked at Dorian's record in Ottawa, the more terrified I was. And to be totally honest with you also, Jamie, I felt like I'd gone a little bit too far with my rant yesterday.
Yeah. I was like, you know what? Should I dial it back? I might have to ask this guy questions at a press conference this week.
Yeah, I was like, goof was a little too much.
Yeah.

Chapter 2: Why is Pierre Dorian being considered for the Canucks GM position?
What exactly is going on here? Right. Like, especially if experience is like, you know, it's, it's one thing if you're, if you're looking at a Ryan Johnson and an Evan gold and Rutherford's going to stick around and at least mentor through this, you know, critical draft season and July one. And then in the summer, he's going to make a decision on his future.
And maybe he takes a step back, but he's still around. It's like, okay, then, you know, it makes sense. But if experience is, is like number one, the number one thing we want is experience. It's like, well, why aren't you hiring a president of hockey operations to replace Jim Rutherford and then hire a GM who's sharp and can execute and can, can be mentored.
Like, cause, cause then sort of the Ryan Johnson question, like will ownership accept Ryan Johnson? It's like, then that's not as much of a question, right? Then, you know, poaching a guy like Evan gold, you don't worry about the inexperience because you've got someone on top to be the mentor and sort of the, where the buck stops guy. Like,
The whole last 48 hours, I think, has posed some really difficult questions. And it'll be fascinating when the Canucks make someone available at 445 today. They haven't they haven't told us who, by the way, might just be the twins.
Yeah.
Right.
I mean, honestly, could be Todd Harvey. Right. Draft related. Could be Rutherford.
We'll see. I doubt Todd Harvey's in town. Todd Harvey's in Europe, I'm sure. I mean, the U18s are just wrapping up. The world championships are coming. He's going to be there. So, like, if Todd Harvey's in Vancouver, he's had a pretty hectic travel schedule. So, yeah, I mean... Like, we'll see.
There's some really tough questions, I think, stemming from the Dorian reports and some of the reporting today. And maybe it's the market just getting over its skis about a bunch of stuff like I did yesterday. But, you know, like, I'll tell you this. My information yesterday and this morning, airtight. Like, I 1,000% stand behind it.

Chapter 3: What are the concerns surrounding Pierre Dorian's track record?
And this is all kind of post Wyshynski on Halbro saying that he thought it was trending in that direction and that Pierre Dorian was going to get the job. And a lot of this falls into the walking it back camp, or at least... Well, some of it does, certainly. So first, earlier today, Irfan Ghaffar tweets, there's nothing imminent on the Canucks GM search.
They have met with Pierre Dorian a few times as they have with other candidates, but no decision has been made yet at all. Still are going through the interview process. Rick Dollywall on his show says Pierre Dorian is, quote, one of the leading candidates. but he hasn't been hired. Other top candidates have not been told they're out. The process is ongoing. Nothing is imminent.
Ryan Johnson is still in the mix. Now, I also have to note, and this was pretty funny, Rick Dollywall left the show mid-segment to take a phone call about the Canucks GM search, came back and reported that the Canucks are concerned about the overwhelming backlash to the idea of hiring Pierre Dorian.
And I know, like I've seen on social media, Canucks fans are like organizing email writing and phone calling campaigns. to the Canucks about it. So maybe they've heard that way. Maybe they're just monitoring social media, but whatever the case is, they are aware and concerned about the backlash.
And then a couple of comments from Gary Mason, as you mentioned first, quote tweeting you and your piece about Pierre Dorian's track record, calls it, A truly bewildering decision, which is a great turn of phrase from Gary Mason, which I really enjoyed. And then just before our show started, he had this tweet. Update.
The Canucks have narrowed their GM search down to five good candidates, which then he immediately contradicts by saying Dorian is one. But he says Dorian is one. But would it be wrong to characterize him in any way as a frontrunner? Ryan Johnson still in the mix as well. And finally, I'll just wrap up with an IRF tweet. kind of concurring with Gary Mason there.
He says, like we've said all along, thorough process, not going to rush this and still have interviews to do, narrowing it down to a short list of people they still want to interview again as part of it, no timeline on hiring a GM. There is at least a possibility that, like, the Canucks online fan segment prevented Pierre Dorian from being the next GM by reacting so vociferously against the idea.
Yeah. Now, I think the question is more... Did this get out for a purpose?
Yes.
