Chapter 1: What were the highlights of the Carolina Hurricanes' Stanley Cup victory?
MUSIC PLAYS
What's up? Welcome to Canucks Talk on Sportsnet 650. I'm Jamie Dodd. My co-host is Thomas Drance. Drance covers the Canucks for The Athletic as well. We are broadcasting live from the Kintec studio. Step strong with orthotics and footwear from Kintec. 650-650 is the Dunbar Lumber text line. Send your thoughts in now. And we're here, Drance. It's the offseason. Officially.
Officially the offseason. Congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Chapter 2: How did the Hurricanes' journey to the championship unfold?
We'll talk a lot about their Stanley Cup triumph last night. We sure will. Let's open the whiteboard. I want to try something. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Settle down. You got bills to pay? No, I want to tell people what's coming up on the show. Okay. Landon Ferraro is going to join us in studio for an hour, as he does on Mondays, starting at 1230. And we'll talk prospects and draft with Jerome Berube from hockeyprospect.com at 130. Another Vigo Bjork believer.
More and more. More and more.
You're hearing it more and more.
Chapter 3: What local connections were highlighted in the Hurricanes' success?
Also very high on Caleb Malhotra as well.
Yes.
It's worth noting. So we'll get into both of those things with Jerome at 130. Landed at 1230. But you're right. By the way, really quickly. Now you don't want to open the whiteboard.
Well, no. You mentioned Viggo Bjork. Yes.
I got distracted you.
He has the 12th largest wingspan to body ratio. Among the draft prospects. Okay.

Chapter 4: What role did analytics play in the Hurricanes' strategy?
So effectively, he's got these gorilla arms because he's also cut. Yes. Right. And so in terms of his reach, he's going to play more like a six footer, right? Like the hop, like just because of his reach. By the way, number one and number three in the draft class might be of interest. Can you guess who it is? Is one Caleb Malhotra? No. One and number three, Liam and Marcus Rock. Really?
Interesting. Long.
Yeah.
They've got the big reach.
Chapter 5: How did injuries impact the Stanley Cup final for the Vegas Golden Knights?
So they measured in at just over six foot. But they've got that reach, which makes sense when you watch them do some of that weird stuff they do on the boards. I think I'm getting more in, to be honest with you. You're getting more rock-pilled? More rock-pilled as we go.
All right. We'll talk to Jerome Berube about that and more at 1.30 about wingspans.
Yes, wingspan. Talk with Jerome Berube.
Wingspan ratio, which is, of course, what we love to focus on here. But right now, let's open. Gosh, come on.
I'm an anti-hype guy. You're killing me. So I'm always looking at different stuff that matters more than the thing that clearly doesn't matter.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of the Hurricanes' win for Canucks fans?
The Stanley Cup winner reminded us with their six. You had to find another different measurement. With their five-foot-eight local first-line center, by the way. Okay, let's go to the whiteboard. All right, fellas, let's focus up.
It is your daily deep dive into what's up with the Canucks for today, June 15th. And of course, the headline is the Carolina Hurricanes. are Stanley Cup champions. They break through, they win, they beat Vegas in six games last night. Congratulations to Jordan Stahl taking home the Kahn-Smythe trophy after a phenomenal... Oldest ever?
Yeah, a phenomenal Stanley Cup final performance and really a capstone to a pretty incredible career as well. Not that he's retiring or anything, but... Congratulations to everyone. There's a lot to go through. You mentioned the local connection.
Chapter 7: What changes are expected in the Canucks' front office this offseason?
He's expiring. Yep. You never know. It'd be a hell of a way to go out. Why not? You mentioned the local connection with Logan Stankoven. He was fantastic. There's a ton of great... Jalen Chatfield, former Canuck, right? There's a ton of interesting stories, great stories. Rod Brindamore, BC native, breaks through and wins as a coach after winning as the captain with the Carolina Hurricanes.
And there's just a lot to... A really fascinating... Not just this final, not just this playoffs, but the arc of the Rod Brindamore and Eric Tulsky Carolina Hurricanes taken as a whole, which really goes back, what, like eight years at this point?
Summer of 2018, about eight years ago this month, you had Rod Brindamore take over as head coach, Tom Dundon by the team, and Eric Tulsky be promoted to a VP role, director or VP of hockey analytics and strategy, after which... their method of operation became decidedly more tall ski pilled. Yeah.
Chapter 8: How can the Canucks learn from the Hurricanes' successful model?
Right. He became the authority through Tom Dundon with that organization, ultimately becoming assistant general manager and then interim general manager after Don Waddell's departure.
And then finally general manager in 2024, I would expect a president's title is, is in the offing at some point, given what we know about Nashville, for example, and Toronto both trying to poach him during this hiring cycle. Yeah. The look, everyone wants to talk about the nerds and I want to give a special shout out to a Canucks Army alumnus and a local guy named Reese Jessup.
Reese Jessup was the editor of Canucks Army. I brought him in when when I was when he was just like a young, bright eyed, bushy tailed guy. He ended up sort of devising some of the research that became Shamsheron. and the potato outdrafting general managers. And while he's got this R&D blogger background, he was an amateur scout when I was in Florida.
He was on Buchla's staff and then moved over and has become, you know, a senior guy with the Carolina Hurricanes. This is a watch the games, Hardo. Rhys Jessup, by the way. So congratulations to him as well. A special shout out. The first, like, Canucks blogger to go on to win a Stanley Cup, as far as I'm aware.
if anyone if I'm wrong if I'm leaving anyone out please let me know but as a very close observer of the space I'd say it's fair to say I think this is true Reese Jessup the first Canucks blogger to win the Stanley Cup so look there's a million different storylines first of all I want to talk about the game itself I thought Brandon Bussey was immense
there was a moment where Carolina was leading, where it began to feel like the sting was out of Vegas is five on five attack. I think the loss of Linus Carlson and some of the injuries, William Carlson. What did I say? Linus. Oh man. Also a really good player. He could, they could have used him. Yeah. William Carlson, the loss of William Carlson, and then a sort of some mounting, uh,
black and blue like the guys who weren't injured but seem to be hurt on the Vegas back end I think sapped them their speed ultimately I thought was going to be a problem all playoffs it wasn't but but all of a sudden that last 40 minutes and really I thought even more pronounced in game five you saw them struggle to generate five on five that said they still had some great looks especially on the power play and should have at least made it to one
if not for the intervention of the crossbar and that Jack Eichel chance, not to mention what was the chance that like, I can't remember who took it, but Brandon Bussey was like on his knees and made the save. I'd forget. So, yeah, I mean, there was some sketchy moments. It wasn't like a dominant Vegas out of answers performance, but it was a, you know, solid defensive showing.
And I think it was very clear who the better team was over the course of that six game series victory for Carolina. There's a million different hockey angles that we could get into and we can get into with Landon, but... I sort of felt invigorated coming out of this sporting weekend generally. Not just the Carolina victory over a Vegas team that was loathsome, to put it politely.
