Combined with Matt Fairburn, our very excellent... A collab. A collab. Between the Sad Club beat writers.
You collaborated. You don't like when I say that you're a collaborator.
I don't like hearing that I'm a collaborator, no.
But in this instance...
You collaborated with Matthew Fairbairn. It's like, why are you calling me a quizling? The... The... Yeah, so, no, collaborated with Fairburn, who's really good, and Canucks fans should follow him, especially if you're tracking the Tage Thompson show in Buffalo at the moment, which you should be.
I mean, that's got to be one of the most fun teams to watch, and the environment tonight is going to be absolutely sick again. But, yeah, we worked the story a little bit, found that the Canucks had requested permission to talk to Kevin Adams.

Chapter 2: Who is Kevyn Adams and what is his track record?
Just get to the bench. You don't have to wait for them to carry it up the ice. But he's just kind of hanging around. And I guess what they're trying to do is make sure they get everyone on because, you know, the first unit power play had gone about 90 seconds. Then they had the second unit out there. So they're trying to get those first unit guys back there. But I think it was Quinn Hughes, too.
Literally, he's just holding the puck in their end. Yeah. And they take it too many men. Like, that is a shocking, shocking position to take too many men. Brutally. And, like, I don't know if, did somebody think the goalie had gone to the bench or something? I have no idea. I have no idea either. But there was, like, no pressure whatsoever, no reason to do it.
None of those three things can happen. And then Quinn Hughes misjudges the curl on a puck, stops skating for just a split second, then realizes his mistake. At that point, it's too late. The empty net goal hilariously is scored, and then Hughes has a bit of a pratfall.
Yeah, spins into the boards.
Brutal. I mean, just a tough moment. You got to leave no doubt, and that's a good lesson for Quinn Hughes.
The moment of the Stanley Cup playoffs for a lot of Canucks fans.
Oh, for sure. I think the wild are looking pretty good in that series though. Like when they get set up against Dallas. So I don't know. I don't know. We'll see. Obviously those two teams are incredible and I never will ever bet against Miko Rantanen in a game seven. So long as he lives after what he did against the Colorado Avalanche. Was that last year? Yeah. Last year.
I'm never going to bet against him. So we'll see. But man, I think the wild have had a pretty decisive territorial edge. Like they look like, the team in control of that series despite the outcome last night.
This text comes in. Can you guys touch on the absolutely familiar look of that Flyers squad and throw Talkett some flowers? Yeah, Rick Talkett doing Rick Talkett things to the Pittsburgh Penguins in this series.

Chapter 3: What are the potential candidates for the Canucks GM position?
No Clevin, no Zub. Yeah, exactly. I remember when we used to play. All right. Anyway. Yakim Chuck in third pair minutes.
Let's go on to the broad sheet here, because as you mentioned off the top, a couple of not necessarily new names, but a little more information and one new name added into the mix.
And I'll start with your report with Matthew Fairburn, your colleague who covers the Sabres at the Athletics, that the Canucks have requested and received permission to interview Kevin Adams, former Sabres general manager.
Now, before we do the deep dive into Kevin Adams, because that's one of our new mini segments coming up here in the whiteboard, I'll run through some of the other intel out there right now. Also noted in your piece, which I found very interesting, that they have not yet requested permission to interview from Buffalo either Sam Ventura or Marc Bergevin.
Rick Dollywall today on Donnie and Dolly mentions that Islanders assistant GM and also their director of player personnel, Ryan Bonus, is a candidate, someone to keep our eye on, as Dollywell says. He's, of course, the son of Rick Bonus, has a pro scouting background, including with the Penguins under Jim Rutherford, also ran Ottawa's AHL affiliate in Belleville for three seasons.
Of course, that was the typical, you're the GM of the AHL team and you're also an assistant GM. for Ottawa situation. So that's another candidate that we've heard in connection now with the Vancouver Canucks. And I'll also say Frank Cervelli with Satin Bic yesterday on Canucks Central says that the sense is the Canucks are seeking someone with prior GM experience.
And he says it's unlikely, at least at this point, to be someone who hasn't done the job before. But I mean, even there, there's a qualification from Cervelli. And as you said, it sounds like they are casting Cervelli. a pretty wide net around the league right now.
So with all of that reporting in mind, one of the new segments, many segments we're going to do here in the whiteboard is the candidate spotlight on as, as long as there's an open GM position for the Vancouver Canucks, we'll try to do this deep dive in to one, or in this case, we're going to do two today candidates for the position that we've heard in connection.
And today it's Ryan bonus and Kevin Adams. Let's start with Kevin Adams because I find it. really difficult to parse and kind of assess his record as a GM. And also, I mean, you've joked about he could be the first fired executive to get Jim Gregory Award votes or to be a real candidate for it. I'm not sure I can ever remember a GM...

Chapter 4: How did the NHL playoffs unfold last night?
Some took care of their staffers. And honestly, you've basically seen the results of that. Like the Florida Panthers were one of them. Vegas was one of them. Tampa Bay was one of them. And some didn't. the Vancouver Canucks among them. And anyway, that's what Buffalo did.
They then proceeded to run like shoestring budgets with all sorts of odd parameters, like very little signing bonuses and on and on in terms of assembling their team. And so within that narrow context, I would say Adams continuously made pretty sharp bets on young talent, like the Kesselring and Doan return for J.J. Paterka.
That's looking like a home run given what Doan's accomplished this season. You know, the Beck Malenstein trade with the Washington Capitals has proved sage. Malenstein's absolutely upped his value ahead of unrestricted free agency this year. The Noah Ostlund pick, obviously the Zach Benson pick, avoiding the mistake that everyone else made, passing on Benson.
You know, the Jack Quinn pick has turned out well. The Jason Zucker bargain bin signing and extension has turned out well for them. The Ryan McLeod for Savoy trade has been a huge win for them. I mean, McLeod's basically been a back-to-back 50-point center. with exceptional shorthanded value, right? Like a really killer guy on the penalty kill.
Most importantly, they've locked up a ton of, oh, the cousins for Norris trade you throw in as a win. How about middle stat for Byram? That's a huge win. Huge win. Yeah. And then you sort of throw in that all of these guys got locked up. Like they have cost certainty on basically everybody except Alex Tuck, obviously, Krebs and Benson, and Byram, right? Who got bridged.
but power that contract's looking great as he performs like a top pair guy the matthias samuelson deal i mean that's what a what a journey that contract's been on yes from like woof to great you know incredible uh doleen obviously uh the tage thompson contract five more years at seven million he's looking like a top 10 player unbelievable so there was a lot of sage bets made By Adams.
And I think if you're a team like the Canucks in their situation, he's an obvious you have to talk to him guy. But that said...
his interactions with the press, his overall organizational leadership, and I think some integrity questions, which are like, would you be comfortable presiding, you know, as the president of Trash Mountain, like of an organization that's not functioning the way a credible NHL organization should be? Like, why were you so comfortable with that?
And then there's the hockey side of it, which is that realistically, the Buffalo Sabres probably had enough talent To be at least a playoff team or in the playoff mix two and a half years ago. And it took them an extra two years to get to the point that they have the last six months, obviously costing Adams his job. Like, why did you fail to consolidate those gains?

Chapter 5: What mistakes did Quinn Hughes make during the playoffs?
So the war room is going to function like this. We're going to pick and choose like draft lottery outcomes or situations, trades, draft pick decisions that the Canucks can make as we go. So here's a nightmare scenario for you.
Okay.
Ready? The St. Louis Blues win the draft lottery. That's not a nightmare. And pick Gavin McKenna. All right. The Florida Panthers pick second. And pick Stenberg. And pick Stenberg. Yeah. The Vancouver Canucks are on the clock with all of the available talent. Yep.
However, the Seattle Kraken, who've dropped to eighth, offer you the eighth pick for the third pick, but they'll throw in Tampa Bay's first round pick. And in this scenario, Tampa Bay's first round pick, they've made the conference final. So it's 28 through 32.
I think. Okay. So you'd have Verhoff, Reed, Malhotra. So that gets you to six. And then I guess like Carols and Rudolph and Rudolph, or I mean like your guy, Viggo Bjork or my guy as well. It's pretty tempting. I got to be honest. I don't know if I could pass on Chase Reed or Keaton Verhoff. But when you just kind of count it out like that, you think like we're still getting a really good guy.
Yeah.
Like a really good player at eight. And we need so much volume in the system. And we missed on like dream world is you get one of Stenberg or McKenna. I think I probably do it. I do it a hundred percent. I think I do it. I think you're right. You just taught, you say like the guys I listed out, we're getting one of them no matter what. And are they all in the same tier?
No, you're, you're dropping off probably a little bit. Are you from Verhoff to like Rudolph probably or Bjork? I don't know. All right. Well, I mean, if you don't, if you don't think you're dropping off, then you definitely do it.
Let's, let's, let's look at the argument. Like, let's like really think about the argument. Like Rudolph is right-handed. He's a stronger skater. Okay. He's six foot four. And he went ahead of Jackson. Rudolph went ahead of him in the selection draft. Now that wasn't because on talent, that was because one of the guys was willing to report to Prince Albert. And one of the guys wasn't.
