Chapter 2: Why is Brendan Gallagher being considered as a potential Canucks target?
Does Gallagher move the needle for them? I'm not sure. Anaheim has tons of cap space. But they also have two major RFA deals to do in Leo Carlson and Cutter Gauthier. Lots of work to do on the blue line. They've already got a couple of veteran forwards in Killorn and Kreider. Doesn't seem to be an obvious fit. I think you could say a similar thing about Philadelphia.
Pittsburgh, can't see them paying a significant price for Brendan Gallagher. So you start to go through the list of, okay, hey, there's all of these teams with cap space, so there's so many people who could be interested. But if you try to build the hockey case for some of them to really go out and say, yes, that's a player we want to give up an asset for, it's hard for me to see.
Now, I don't think it's ā I'm not trying to say that the Canucks are the only team that would be interested. I look at a team like Columbus, Nashville, maybe Calgary. I could see one of them taking a flyer. So you add it all up, and I don't know if ā I think some Canucks fans saw the news that Brendan Gallagher
specifically referenced Vancouver, knows that he's probably on the way out of Montreal and immediately started to think, oh, they're going to get a second round pick to take on Brendan Gallagher. I don't think we're in that phase of things anymore.
But I also don't think this is a situation where the Canucks are going to have to be sending something like a fourth round pick in return like they did for Evander Kane. It honestly feels pretty close to neutral value. I actually think the more interesting deal might be the Calgary Flames acquiring Ryan Strom for a seventh round pick at the trade deadline.
And that's a similar guy, longtime veteran player, has recently productive seasons on his resume, but was a healthy scratch for times this year, fell out of favor with his team. and ended up going for a seventh-round pick. Something like that would seem to make sense.
Maybe it's something where the Canucks get a fourth-round pick, but they send a sixth-round pick back to Montreal, and so they move up a little bit in the draft for taking Brendan Gallagher's salary. I wouldn't expect it to be a bounty of value coming back to the Canucks, but I would also expect it to be marginal, if any, value going out if they do have to pay to acquire him.
And again, at that rate, and I'm not even concerned about, okay, can you build him up and then flip him at the deadline? I think it would just be awesome to have Brendan Gallagher here. A guy who can represent the franchise, really speak to the fans, connect with the fans in a time where they're going to need someone to do that.
You know, it's great to say, hey, if they draft Caleb Malhotra, he's the future captain and he's the face of the rebuild. He's probably not going to be here next year. He's going to the NCAA. So who on the roster right now is capable of being that front-facing figure for the team? I don't think it's Filip Ronic. Maybe Brock Besser. It's definitely not Elias Pettersson.
