Chapter 1: What was the impact of the Simon Nemec trade on the NHL?
. . .
What's up? Welcome to Canucks Talk here on Sportsnet 650. I'm Jamie Dodd. My co-host is Thomas Drance. Drance, what's up, also covers the Canucks for the Athletic.
I forgot that I went to war with the term what's up.
Oh yeah, you really hated it. What I would say beyond all reason. Well, that doesn't sound like me. Um... Yeah. Anyways, you cover the team for the athletic as well. We are broadcasting live from the Kintec studio. Step strong with orthotics and footwear from Kintec. 650-650 is the Dunbar Lumber text line trusted by contractors and DIY champions across Metro Vancouver for generations.
Find them at three convenient locations or visit Dunbar Lumber.com. online today. Big show coming up today here on Canucks Talk. We're going to chat. We're going to continue our Canucks Talk mock draft with Scott Wheeler, who also coincidentally works at The Athletic and released his final two-round mock draft at The Athletic today. So, of course, we started with Corey Promen.
We got through picks one through eight. We're going to do nine to 16 with Scott, and maybe we can chat about some of the Canucks targets he has them taking today. in his two-round mock draft later on as well. And, of course, we'll check.
He really gave Canucks fans a lot to be excited about. The Vancouver Giants angle with Mathis Preston and the Ruck Bros. Yeah. Let's go. Canucks fans would be pretty excited about that. I'd be pretty excited about that. I will say, though, I actually, correct me if I'm wrong, he had Mathis Preston over Blyle. I think that's right. And I think he had him over Hermanson.
Yes, he definitely had him over Hermanson.
He was at 25. Or no. He had him over Hermanson. He gave the Canucks a prospect that I really, really like in a way that would really, really upset me. Can't leave Hermanson on the board there.

Chapter 2: How will the Calgary Flames benefit from acquiring Nemec?
Doing something you're excited about in a way that drives you nuts.
No, yeah. The value's not there if Hermanson's on the board. Like, we have to be very, very serious. Like, Hermanson dusted, like, Elias Pettersson. Yeah. At 17 in the Allsvenskan. He dusted Jesper Brad. He's dusted Philip Forsberg. He's the fifth most productive... or the fourth most productive Allsvenskan 17-year-old scorer in the last 20 years.
And the three guys ahead of him are like Pasternak and like all household names. And he's the best of the rest. And then a bunch of the other guys in the top 10 are all NHL level stars. It's like, come on, no.
I'm not saying he's Pasternak, but it's that type of bet. I mean, there's a lot of upside, especially at that point in the first round. So we'll chat with Scott Wheeler. We'll chat with Yannick Hansen, both in the second hour of the show, which means we've got a whole hour of alone time. Coming up here, Drance.
Not quite. So sorry, me and Dom have been moving things around as we've been talking. Wheeler is in segment two.
Wheeler at 1230, Yannick at 130. Yes. So we'll squeeze some more alone time in there at one.
Accommodating my dog grooming schedule. Sorry about that, Jamie.
Yes, indeed. All right. With all of that out of the way, let's go to the whiteboard.
All right, fellas, let's focus up.

Chapter 3: What are the details of the Canucks' upcoming development camp?
So there was no world where I could get to Abbotsford on the 1st. But you know me, I love development camp. I always get a lot of takeaways from it.
DevCamp is awesome. I always love it because it's always in the last week before we go on hiatus for the summer. And I think it's a great way to wrap up our show for the year and this year Drance like this is the start of what we would expect to be a string of like very significant and very interesting dev camps because there's been years past right where it's like Yoni Yermo is here
It's like, okay. Yeah, yeah. I mean, this is different, though.
The third overall pick's going to be there. The one we covered on location, remember we had Brustevich on?
Yeah, that was good.
He was a beauty. We had Aiden Celebrini on. He was a beauty. Yep. Higgins joined us and didn't drop the Predator eyes, but he was great. He's always great. I mean, Chris Higgins rocks. And then, but I remember I had huge takeaways from that. That was the Leckermackie coming off his really good season. Yes. He was great at that development camp. That was Tom Volander was like the big name player.
prospect. And then I remember thinking Elias Pettersson was a legit prospect and, you know, really opened my eyes coming out of that dev camp. And, you know, I know he had a rough season, but so did everybody. Yes. And especially, especially like
the defensive defenseman it's like you're telling me a defensive defenseman looked bad in that structural environment like yeah i'm not writing off elias petterson even if he performed at a very low level last season because no one looked good away from the puck on the canucks and that includes guys like marcus petterson who i know for sure are really good away from the puck you bring up a good point though because there's a few things i like about dev camp right and one is of course you're
many of whom will have just been drafted, right? You know, we all know four picks in the first 41. You would expect all of those guys to be there, assuming they're healthy at dev camp. That's exciting. You get a chance to talk to the prospects. That's great as well. And then you also, you know, there's a lot more accessibility to...

Chapter 4: Which Canucks prospects are expected to shine at development camp?
And I've had a chance to interview both Seeley and Hermiston over the course of the past two weeks. I'll run my Hermiston piece probably as development camp opens at The Athletic. But yeah, both would be really good conversations for us to try and snag as guests while we're there. I'm curious to see, too, how the club approaches it.
You know, the development camp that we were just talking about out at UBC was like a big old school one where you had like the big scrimmage at the end of it. The last couple of years since then, they've gone to a smaller format, fewer invites. And this year, a three-on-three tournament on Thursday, July 2nd. You can go buy tickets to that. And by the way, the tickets are free.
at Canucks.com if any of our listeners are interested in heading out to the Valley for a Canucks Prospects three-on-three tournament. But that suggests... Or if you already live in the Valley. Or if you already live in the Valley. That suggests to me that we're probably looking at a smaller...
format dev camp again this year and that also i think is is telling in terms of you know this organization's made no bones about the fact that they viewed player development is like the engine of of this next era of what will drive this next era so that means the development camp obviously becomes a pretty important vehicle for this franchise all right so
the other headline now that we've tied off dev camp is of course that we are just a few days away from the NHL draft. And that means it's trade season. And we have breaking news on a trade does not involve the Vancouver Canucks, but both Pierre LeBron and Elliot Friedman reporting Simone Nemech being traded from New Jersey to to the Calgary flames.
So in the division, joining the Calgary flames, another rebuilding Western Canadian team, but taking the type of swing that we see a lot of rebuilding teams take right guy with a lot of draft capital who hasn't necessarily popped with his team available. And they're going to try to get more out of them.
I wonder what this is. We're going to see what the return is. White cloud first and a second. What would your guess be? Oh, man. Do you think the New Jersey Devils are preferring to get a piece back now? A win now piece?
I don't know if White Cloud is going to do it for them. Like White Cloud in a second?
No.

Chapter 5: What are the latest rumors surrounding Elias Pettersson's future?
Something like that. Yeah. My gut is that this is a pure futures deal. but I mean, I wonder if Calgary, like one thing I've been, um, one thing I've been, sorry, I got a text from my wife that showed up on my thing that I, I was like, no, and, and it was, um, she like texted me. She was like, Oh my God, I just witnessed a crime. So I was like legitimately worried.
And then I got the followup text. You won't believe what they paid for Simone. And, and, and, and then it was, uh, and then, and then she followed it up with someone just microwaved fish at the office. So, like, I had this moment where I was like, oh, my God, is my wife okay? And then I was like, yeah, she's fine. She's just a doofus. Wow.
All right. Now, we do have this. We don't have the full return. But Pat Steinberg, our colleague from 960, awesome dude in Calgary, says, sounds like this is going to be a substantial package for Nemech. So, take that. Would you call 30 and 35 a substantial package? Yeah, I guess. But no, I would think there's more there. Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know, but I'd be like hyping up like, oh, there's going to be a lot of stuff here. Dom, Dom, what is it? Woo. Okay, hold on. No, Elliot Friedman just tweeted. It is Nemech and Siplikov for the New York Rangers second this year, which is high. That's going to be like 35, right? The Vegas first in 2027 and the Colorado first in 2028, both top 10 protected and Etienne Moran. Okay, good.
Yeah. So two first round picks. I'll be at both set up to be late, but you never know. Like the age and they got, but they got Siplikov too.
Yeah. And they got Siplikov. So Nemech and Siplikov to Calgary. Oh man. I mean, that's a lot of young defensemen for the Calgary flames, right? Like that's a lot of young pedigree defenders. Oh, sorry. Siplikov, Maxim, the forward. Okay.

Chapter 6: How does the Canucks' veteran situation affect their roster?
Nevermind. Sorry. For a moment, I thought it was silly.
Oh, silly. Yeah. No, no, no.
This is Maxim Siplikov, a 27 year old. I love Maxim Siplikov.
he had a really brutal season last year like was barely an nhler yeah at two and a half million but he had two he had two goals and four points but that guy runs but that guy runs around yeah and he like no he's fast he's physical he's like one of those he's one of those guys i like you know just like he makes stuff happen whether he's scoring or not and that first season in uh long island he actually produced he was actually really good so i like that as a reclamation project okay so it's two firsts
How much did he have left on his deal?
Just one year. But he's signed for next year? He's signed for this upcoming season at two and a half and then he's UFA. And then Etienne Morin. I actually loved Etienne Morin in his draft year, to be totally honest with you. He obviously hasn't delivered on his promise. I like that a lot for the Calgary Flames. I think it makes sense for the Devils to just kind of re-roll here. Um...
Yeah, I don't know. I don't, I don't think that's, I don't see how that moves the needle for the New Jersey Devils.
Yeah. So they get 35 this year and then. Well, and they got, and they get two firsts in the future. 27, 28. Now they're top 10 protected. So there's not crazy upside, but we've also seen, you know, Vegas missed the playoffs with injury, right? And they're, they're an aging team. So that there's a world where that could be like 13 or something like that. You feel pretty good about that. I guess.
I mean, that requires a lot. Yes. You feel better than if it's, you know, 28 or 29 or whatever it's going to be.

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the upcoming NHL draft for the Canucks?
Cause that would be, it would have been a disaster if they hadn't got loose drain. And so I know that he's a sharp guy and you, you'd think that he has a bead on, on a guy like Moran. So yeah, Okay. I think that's a really good buy low for the Calgary flames. I actually think they bought low on two pieces that I like probably the best in that deal.
I mean, obviously the simple cough is not as valuable as the second or the two firsts, but you know, Nemech is a guy with real juice. I don't know that he's going to be able to scale up and be like a hard minutes true number one, but I'll tell you this. He's legitimately the best defenseman in the league three on three. All right. He's the best three on three defense. More than like Quinn Hughes?
Oh, by a mile. Wow. By a mile. He's the best three on three defenseman in the league. It's not close. Good for him. But that tells you something about his game. Yes. In terms of the Rocket League version of hockey, you know, the individual movement, the individual ability to skate up ice, like he's got more juice than Sonny D. Like he's got juice all day.
The defensive side of the game hasn't come along, but he's young enough that I don't think you look at that and say he can't figure it out. I think he absolutely can. And so, yeah, I mean, and you get him at a... You're not getting him at like 80 cents on the dollar or whatever, but where else are you getting a right-handed defenseman this age? You know what I mean?
He's only 22.
Yeah, he's only 22. He... needs a second contract.
It's not like he's come up and looks totally out of place. Like there's flaws in his game, but he produces.
Also, he's been on the same team as Dougie Hamilton. Like he hasn't been a power play one guy. Yeah. Well, Calgary has that opportunity available to him. And we saw him operate with like Dvorsky and Slavkovsky up high at the Olympics for Slovakia. And it looked great. Like it looked really, really good. So now he's going to step into a bigger opportunity here.
He's going to be the guy whom they run their power play through at the point you would think. I mean, Parekh, I guess. Parekh is in there, for sure. But, you know, if you're Calgary, I mean, two things... You've got options. Two things that are really hard to find.

Chapter 8: How are teams navigating trade discussions ahead of the draft?
Elite RD, right? You've got two outs to have a stud defender across the next three or four years if Parekh or Nemech can begin to take the sorts of steps you need them to to get to that level. I also think it frees them up from... not necessarily having to draft a defender in this class. Right. If they, if they're a big Bjork team, right. All of a sudden that becomes appealing.
And look, I'm telling you right now, like there are teams around the league who have Bjork as high as two, you know, like I, I personally think that Bjork is closer to, To a Stenberg caliber prospect. I'm not going to put him in the same tier as McKenna, but I think he's closer to the Stenberg tier prospect for me.
Then, you know, guys who I also really like, but who I'd have in a lower tier, like, like a Caleb Malhotra.
Now, the other angle to this for me, and obviously the Flames getting Nemech, division rival, also a rebuilding team, that's very relevant. The other interesting angle is now we have another team in the Eastern Conference. Loaded with draft picks. That doesn't want to take a step back. That Delta player purely for draft picks.
I know they got Etienne Moran here still, but this is a purely futures draft pick move for the Devils, and you got to think there's another shoe to drop. And so it's really interesting because both these, the Brady could Chuck move from Ottawa's perspective, you know, it would be the smartest acquisition the devils can make.
This is pure fantasy hockey. Yeah. I'm so serious.
They just traded a young right shot defenseman. Yeah.
But like, if you wanted to get back on track on the, how do we unite the Quinn, the, the, the, that's so true. There's no better lure than like, we've got your brothers and your guy and your guy. That's a good point. It's never going to happen, but it's a funny thing to consider.
But both of these now feel like, okay, the Brady Kachuk is step one from the Ottawa Senator's perspective. And this feels like step one from the New Jersey devil's perspective, right? They don't feel like closed loops. They feel like preludes to more action, which is fantastic from my point of view.
