You are happy to have some sunshine, eh?
Oh, the weather. Are you kidding me? It's incredible. We're going to get up to 20. That's like perfect. Yeah. What? An incredible... That's a great high. Oh, now it's saying 17, but whatever. Earlier, it was projected. Earlier, it was projected at 20, which is awesome. It was beautiful over the weekend as well. Got out, coached some baseball, relaxed. It was fantastic. I'm doing great.
That's awesome. I had...
an on the nose experience encountering in real life, a bell curve. Ooh. I took my dog for a walk on the seawall and I just, so I went for like a big long, you know, six K 80 minute walk, not a Josh Elliott Wolf walk, but no, not a, not a, not a, not a proper Canucks slash Josh Elliott Wolf style death March, but a long walk on the seawall. And I hadn't accounted for the sunrun.
Ah, so I was walking back on second and it was, you know, absolutely clumped and I could see to the right on seventh where the race was that it was still like thick with runners. Sure. And I could see it. And so it's like, this experience where at the start, there's like a few really fast runners. Right, right, right. And then I, the long tail on one side.
And then I'd go for like another loop, another kilometer and a bit, go to the dog park, sit in the shade. And then I'd come back and it's like still really fast runners, but now they're clumped even thicker. you know, and then like slowly, but surely you get to normies and people who are running at a pace that I can match with my dog without tripping anybody, which was what I was waiting for.

Chapter 2: What GM candidates are being considered for the Vancouver Canucks?
That is deeply, deeply upsetting.
Let's just reel it off for fun. Florida Panthers, Bill Zito, rookie GM. These are Stanley Cup winners, by the way, in reverse order. Vegas Golden Knights, McCrimmon, first-time GM. Colorado Avalanche, it was McFarland, first-time GM. Tampa Bay Lightning, that's Julian Brisebois, first-time GM.
You have to go back to, I mean, Doug Armstrong's been the GM there for so long, I don't remember if he had a job before.
I have no idea. That's a great question.
But then you go even past that. The Washington Capitals McFarland or sorry, McClellan. Yeah, that's a first time GM. Yeah, you literally like literally you have to go back to when Jim Rutherford last won a Stanley Cup to find a GM who wasn't a first time GM who won a Stanley Cup. Doug Armstrong was the GM of the Stars.
before oh okay before so so okay so 2018-19 yeah but you haven't had a single guy and like by the way why do you think all these retreads aren't getting jobs like why do you think every other team in the league seems to be like really in on sunny meta and company yep you know It's because guess what? There's a lot of GMs who haven't done the job very well.
And also, and you know, they were talking about this on Donnie and Dolly and it's like, you know, well, Benning and Alvin, two rookie GMs. And I don't think we need to chalk up Jim Benning's failures to him being a rookie. I think there were other things going on there, especially because it's not like he was in the job for two years. He was in the job for almost eight years.
By the time he was fired, he wasn't exactly a rookie. Like, he was a rookie in the sense that it was his first job, but he had been doing the job for a long time and shown zero growth and improvement. It was not a bad hire because he was a first-time GM. It was a bad hire because he was Jim Benning. Well, and also...
There's actually a lot of similarities between Benning and Alvin, not just their experience level, but their backgrounds, right? They were both pro players, amateur scouts, like Bergevin, pro scout, pro player, became a pro scout. Like, no more scouts. Yep. Like, I don't care who you get, but make sure they have an MBA at least, and ideally a JD.

Chapter 3: What challenges does the new GM face in the current state of the team?
Yeah, no doubt about it. Okay, we can talk a lot more about the pros and cons of some of the candidates and how this process is shaping up later on in the show. I just want to touch on the Stanley Cup playoffs real quick. And we'll talk about Canucks with Landon, but also the playoffs so we can dig into some of what happened over the weekend with Landon.
But on the slate tonight, we're going through the games starting off at four o'clock. Rick Talkett and the Philadelphia Flyers looking to take a 2-0 series lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh. What an immense defensive effort that was. I do just want to say also, I don't do a ton of back padding on the show.
But when we were in the lead up to the Quinn Hughes trade and we were talking about teams that might be interested in like what the key prospect could be that they would offer. And I always brought up Porter Martone and Philly. And Don would always rip me. And Don's like, Jamie's obsessed with Porter Martone. Why are you so all over Porter Martone? Were you all over him as a bad player?
No, I was all over him as a good player. I was like, oh, Porter Martone, that'd be the kind of guy that could be a centerpiece of a Quinn Hughes trade. And I got some flack for it. And now look at him. Now look at him. So that's all I'm saying.
Wow, Jamie, getting the back patting machine. You know that second overall pick? I knew he'd be good. He was like fourth, I think.
Dom, fact check. He wasn't second. He was not second. To Matthew Shaver? I don't think so. Maybe you're right. No, he was sixth. Sixth overall pick. Come on.
I thought he was second.
Everyone was rolling their eyes like, oh, really? You'd do it for Porter Martone?
It's like, yeah, he's sick. He's awesome. Man, this is also like the draft, you know, like... now a year out, right? If the Sharks had Porter Martone, we'd be like, oh my God. Yeah. Can you imagine Porter Martone in Celebrini? Or Utah. Yeah. I mean, especially like Utah's running Yamamoto on that line with Cooley and like Porter Martone's a monster.

Chapter 4: How does Jim Rutherford's influence affect the GM search?
I was having a comp battle in my text messages with a variety of NHL sources during that game. And I was suggesting, like, jumbo-sized Gunther. For Porter Martone? Yeah, but he is not as good a skater as Gunther is. Gunther's sleeker, stylistically. Like, Gunther's a little more Matt Boldy.
And the suggestion I got back from One Scout, which I completely accept, I think they nailed it, is meaner Jason Robertson. Ooh, I like that. And it's like, oh, that'll play.
Yeah. I would say so. That sounds cool. Anyways, I wanted to take my Porter Martone victory lap for some reason. Fair enough. Sens and Carolina at 430 wild at stars. The stars looking to bounce back and avoid going down to nothing on home ice. And then the final series to get underway. The Ducks and the Oilers goes at seven. So full four games on the slate.
It is the best time of year for watching hockey because we get slates like this night in night out. We'll talk about the Stanley Cup playoffs as well as the Canucks. What we heard from the players, which we really haven't had a chance to get into at all. pretty much strands because of all the news around the GM search and Patrick Alvin getting fired.
But we'll talk about it with Landon Ferraro as well as the Stanley Cup playoffs next year on Canucks Talk Sportsnet 650.
