You're going well. I'm going well. It's going well. I'm back in Vancouver, and it's raining immediately, so that makes me feel like I'm home. It's going to be a one-off, though. Don't worry. Is it? Yes.
Okay. It's going to be nice this week. Okay, good. I think we've talked about this before. I obsessively check the weather forecast. Yeah, me too. Well, apparently not. We didn't know it was going to be a one-off today. Well, that's because I'm new in town. Oh, I see. And then off to Buffalo for the Combine, which is going to be interesting.
We'll figure out what does Canucks talk live from the Combine sound and feel like. Well, I won't be there, but you'll be there. Half of Canucks talk live from the Combine. Yeah, but that counts. No? It's the closest we're going to get. So I guess it has to count. So looking forward to that.
Are you going to do like, because you know, like when, now you're not a rights holder, so you probably won't get to do this, but you know how like Books does, he gets to do like his own set of interviews. Yeah, no. Are you going to catch up with some people? You know, I should have probably talked to Cam. Because you're not a rights holder. I'm like, well, actually, I guess kind of you are.
I probably figured that out. Yeah. But the... No, no. I'm going to set up shop in the Marriott restaurant where you can see what's happening. Right. Yeah. Like a mob boss. Yeah. Where you're like, your office is the booth at the restaurant. More or less. But honestly, I'm already setting things up.
What I understand about the combine, and I've never actually covered it before because the Canucks don't usually like to accumulate draft capital, is actually players, like the young players, especially in the early part of the week, are like bored. Right. Like don't actually have a lot to do necessarily.
So what I've understood, and so far the feedback's been consistent with it, is if you reach out to their representatives and set up a bunch of interviews like, penciling you in for a 15 minute one-on-one is actually something that's like, there you go. Good. You know what I mean? That people are like happy to do because it's like, Oh, thank God.

Chapter 2: How might the Canucks approach spending under new management?
All right, fellas, let's focus up. It is your daily deep dive into what's up with the Canucks for today, May 25th. And the headline is Manny Watch continues as we continue to wait and see. Will the Canucks name Manny Malhotra their new head coach after dismissing Adam Foote last week? What would you say off the top on the spot here? Would do we get news this week? I would hope so.
I would think so, certainly. So I know on Halford and Brough this morning, they said if we don't have news by Wednesday, they're going to start panicking and poisoning the well and making up things. I think Wednesday is a little steep. It's already Monday. At least by Wednesday at Halford and Brough's time, at least. At least you're not hearing lots of other names linked to the search.
You're still, I think, in a point where... a negotiation is relatively normal, especially when you consider some of the other stuff that's on, you know, a new general manager who needs to relocate to the city's plate, right? Like, well, we're confident it's going to get done. You know, we, we made some changes last week. Yeah. I think you have 10 days.
I think you have 10 days to two weeks if you have a very obvious internal candidate and don't. Yeah. So I think, I think you get this whole week. I would say, I don't think it's a story to the draft combine. That's my gut start being like nervous is the wrong word, but like curious until like after our show on Thursday, I think that's when I'd be like, Hmm, interesting.
Are we going to get this this week? And if we don't get it this week, what does it mean? Yeah. So I think I'm already though at a point where, and it's less about the timeline here than it is about, an overall flow of operation across the last, let's say six months since the Canucks kind of entered a clear rebuilding posture, right?
We saw them behave differently at the deadline than the other rebuilding teams like Chicago and Calgary that were willing to take money back, you know, to juice their returns. The Canucks shed salary at the deadline in the Garland and Myers deal. They did retain on Myers, which should be noted. but they didn't take money back.
And then Patrick Alvin discussed hitting the cap floor, which is something that has never applied or been a concern to the Vancouver Canucks who to their credit organizationally have always spent on player personnel up to the upper limit. We then had, you know, a general manager search with a lot of reporting that some level of financial decision-making played a role in the outcome.
I don't know that that reporting is accurate. Like, I haven't confirmed that reporting for myself. I've been working on it, too. But that's absolutely out there from credible reporters like Rick Dollywall. And then the thing I do know for sure is that they drove a really hard bargain with the twins getting directly involved in negotiating with Rian Johnson.
I saw Andy Strickland had another report on that. So there's a lot of reporting out there. And I know not the numbers or the term on Ryan Johnson's deal, but that that negotiation was a very hard line. That I know for sure. That I absolutely can confirm. Now, firing Adam Foote and his staff and doing so without hesitation is a healthy data point, right?

Chapter 3: What weaknesses did Adam Foote's coaching staff reveal?
Right. That's like one interpretation of the facts here. The problem with that, though, right, is... And that can actually be part of this type of negotiation, right? Because one of the things that I think Adam Foote got wrong that I think he struggled with in his first year as head coach is I don't think he had the right staff. Right.
And we mentioned this when he first got hired, like they better go get a really experienced head coach, like a guy who's coached behind an NHL bench in the past. And they didn't. And I think that was a problem, right? Like, I think there were beats that foot missed in part because, uh, you know, a veteran NHL head coach might've been able to identify certain like small examples, right? Like,
Adam Foote didn't do the daily briefing before the season. He was like rotating through his assistant coaches. Well, that gives you less time to build rapport. That gives you less face time before the stress is high to sort of build your Q rating locally. Like it's a tiny thing, but it actually matters.
And a guy like John Tortorella, who has been a head coach forever, I mean, he sometimes will have an assistant do his briefings, but very rarely. And not in the time of year where it's like that. Sometimes he'll just skip the briefing altogether. Sometimes he'll just skip the briefing altogether and get fine. So anyway, I think landing, and maybe that's part of this.
you know, okay, if I'm bending on salary, I better get the necessary budget to have the sorts of assistant coaches that I really need. Yeah. Especially, like, remember, he had... He was on the... Travis Green coaching staff in Vancouver that had Newell Brown, who's not cheap, right?
Like Newell Brown's like one of the most respected, long-tenured assistants with a power play specialty in the NHL. He's worked consistently across, what, 15 years now? I mean, that's not an affordable assistant coach profile. Green had Baumgartner, his guy. They had Ian Clark on the goalie staff. They had Malhotra himself, right? Like that was a relatively robust staff in Toronto.
You know, Chenoweth, They had Paul McClain or sorry, Paul McClain. Is that right? I think so. With the, with the big mustache. I know I'm right that he was with Malhotra, but they dovetailed in Toronto. Okay. I think he's retired, unfortunately. So, but they, you know, Guy Boucher, they went and they brought in Carberry.
I mean, that was a loaded coaching staff that Malhotra saw function under, under Sheldon Keefe. So for all I know, that's part of a conversation too. Like you got to make sure that you get the right staff. And I think if you're Malhotra, right? Like this is not going to be a winning environment. Most likely, overwhelmingly likely.
This is your first and best shot to be a head coach, you know, bringing in a really experienced assistant. I don't even know who his guy, like quote unquote, I always say a coach needs their guy on their staff. I think that was another issue with foot. I don't think he had a guy. He didn't have an Adam Foote. What Adam Foote was for Rick Tockett. Yeah. So I don't know.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of the Canucks' head coach negotiations?
Bruce Boudreau style. Right. You know what I mean? Yep. And, and at least publicly you're saying like, Oh, we're, you know, we're going to deciding we're deciding. Yeah. That said, that's not the most respectful or like ethical way to go about it, but there's things you learn as you go. Like one other thing, you know, that you learn as you go in this industry is whenever you fire someone,
or especially if you're firing an entire staff, it gets out immediately because people who are fired leak immediately. Yeah, they're like, I don't care. I'm not going to protect your news. And that did happen for the Canucks. You know what I mean? They didn't have the release ready to go.
They sort of ended up announcing it on Twitter with a one-line announcement, you know, like right on the heels of the weekend where like the Canucks are really going to tamp down on leaks. They're going to announce everything themselves, right? And it's like, But this is what you learn, right? When you dismiss coaches, you tell them, call your wife because we're announcing in five minutes.
Is that heartless? For sure. But if you want to control the message, that's how it's done. We should probably talk quickly about the Stanley Cup playoffs here as well.
Actually, I'll just mention in the broad sheet, I mean, there's nothing necessarily earth-shaking here, but both Dolly Wall and Elliott Friedman on Donnie and Dolly today saying, you know, this could be something we find out pretty soon here.
probably negotiating with Malhotra as we speak so yeah that kind of end of the week deadline Wednesday Thursday somewhere in there seems like a pretty good chance we'll have a resolution on this and I'll give them even more time I'd say before the combine which is Tuesday of next week all right if you have it done before the combine because you can't announce it during the combine Brian Johnson and you know presumably some of the twins and you know your staff will be out of town yeah so before you leave town for the combine you got to get this plus then you can talk about it with Caleb at the dinner date
That's true. You want to have it settled. I think, I think before you have your date with Caleb, I think the team will be having a dinner date with Caleb every night. If they hire Malhotra. All right. Stanley Cup playoffs. We got to mention Colorado on the verge of a stunning exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs. They trail Vegas 3-0. They're so out of Vegas. In the Western Conference Finals.
They blew a 3-0 lead in Game 3 last night. Yeah, that's part of the story, right? Cale McCarmis is the first two games. Jared Bednar has some weird commentary kind of suggesting that like I don't know. Maybe not suggesting that Kel McCarr is sitting out when he doesn't need to be, but basically putting the onus on him to get back in the lineup.
We saw Nathan McKinnon block the shot, and he was obviously hobbled. It sounds like he's going to go in game four, but a limited version of Nathan McKinnon Goaltending a huge part of this story as well. And look, Vegas, a very easy to dislike franchise. And I understand that for a whole host of reasons.

Chapter 5: How is the NHL Playoffs shaping up for the Canucks and their rivals?
Yep. I don't think they are though. I think that would be a tough series. But you know what? I haven't liked Vegas in a single series yet. So I know I'm going to, I haven't, I haven't liked them in a single game. I've watched every game they've played. And at no point have I thought to myself, wow, they're the better team. They're really doing it. Yeah.
In fact, every time I'm like, man, Anaheim, they're really struggling against Anaheim speed or like, Oh Utah, they're really struggling against Utah speed or like, Oh wow. Colorado finally figured it out and is going to, you know, smash this team. Yep. And they just keep coming. Kudos to them. The zombie Tortorella golden Knights. It's wild. Incredible. All right.
Let's finish off the whiteboard by going to the war room. To do this as fast as possible, we've got to be very careful and go slow. Finding those guys with the predator eyes. Are there needs or areas of intrigue from a certain player type? Vancouver Canucks are proud to select. All right, Drance, you're up. Okay. I presented one on Thursday. Sounds good. Okay, so I've... Huh? Okay, go ahead.
What do you mean? So I've simulated... I've simulated a draft. Okay. On Will Scouch's. Yes. Excellent tool. Excellent tool. Bestest, goodest NHL draft simulator dot base dot 44 dot APP. Rolls off the top. Really does. Check it out. Okay. So I've simulated to 24. The Canucks took Caleb Malhotra with both wingers off the board. That's already locked. Okay. So we're going all the way to 24. Okay.
And at 20, Wyatt Cullen went, Xavier Villeneuve went 21, Mathis Preston went 22, and Elton Hermanson. Ooh, I like Elton Hermanson. Me too, went 23. Okay. So the best players available still are like Gustafson, Hurlburt, Pippa Reinen, Maddox Desjardins. Yeah. But also there's a couple forwards named Liam and Marcus Ruck. Ooh, okay. Who remain on the board.
Seattle views this range of the draft as being pretty flat. Okay. Generally speaking. And you have the opportunity now to trade up to the 25th overall pick and lock in a ruck ruck selection in Buffalo and call their names both at once. However, it will cost you. You go from 33. You have the 33rd overall pick.
Yep.
to 38. So you lose five spots, but in a pretty valuable part of the draft. Yeah. And you go from 78 in the third round to 102 in the fourth. So you're giving up 20. No, you're okay. You're giving up 33, 33 and seven. So you're giving up 33 and 78. Yes, but you're getting 25 and 38. Okay. Sorry, but you're getting 25. You're giving up 33. Sorry, you're giving up 33. Yeah, we're killing it.
You're giving up 33 and 78. And you get 25. Or you're giving up 33. Anyway. Good job. We nailed it. No, you're trading down a full round from the third to the fourth. Okay. You're trading down and you're trading down. Right.

Chapter 6: What draft trade proposals are being discussed for the Canucks?
Okay. I screwed it up. It's my black, which we've met in black. This is an incredible offer. I'm jumping at this. Okay. So let's, let's change it. You're going from 38 to you're going from 33 to a hundred and, or you're going from 33 to 99. Okay. But you get both rocks. I don't want to give away picks to get the rocks.
I look like, I think they're going to be good players, like interesting prospects. They produced a ton. It's a little too cute for me. Fair enough. And I get it. Is this the rock music? No, your whole scenario was very vaudeville. It was like Betty Hill shenanigans. Well, I screwed it up. It's my bad. It's my bad. I should have written it down. I'm sorry. It's all right.
I put you on the spot right before the show. Yeah. So whatever. All good. Still, I could have done better. Look, I get the attraction with the rocks. And if they're there and somebody texted in like 24 and 33, you can probably just get them. Especially if you take one at 24 and let's like... You could probably just get them. People like Marcus Ruck. Yeah.
He's not... Like, Liam's probably not going to be on... The truth is that it's probably going to require you trading up from 24. Which I'm not interested in. Is the issue. No. I don't want to do that. But if Liam's at... Liam's there. Yeah. And you're trading from the top of the second to the fourth to lock it in. If Ruck... If Liam is there at 24, I have no problem picking him.
But then I would just say, well, we'll see if Marcus is there. There's no rule that you have to like maneuver around the board to get both of them. No, but it's cool. All right. Sure. We're like, how much of a premium do you want to pay for that? Yeah. None, none, none. You're right. Take them and see what everyone else does. You know what? When you're right, you're right. That's right.
That's what they say. All right.

Chapter 7: What factors influence the Canucks' decision-making during their rebuild?
Landon Ferraro joins us in studio next year on Canucks Talk Sportsnet 650.
