5: CataractCoach PodCast 5: Surgical Learning & Coaching

About six weeks ago I posted a video discussing the question, "Should you give up operating?" because it is asked to me just about every week by young surgeons from around the world. It is a complex question and a very serious topic and it generated a tremendous amount of interest. It also raised even more questions about the best methods of surgical learning and the role of coaching in improving surgical performance. I interviewed two surgeons with expertise in this area for this podcast.  Dr Anuradha Khanna is professor and vice chair of education at Loyola University in Chicago where she has been leading resident, fellow, and medical student education for many years. Her keen insight shows that perhaps we need to do a better job as professors and teachers and that a course to educate the educators can be beneficial. If you are having trouble with the tough learning curve of ophthalmic surgery, I implore you to listen to this podcast carefully.  The second half of the podcast is a great discussion with Dr Sara Bozorg who is a lifelong athlete who brings those ideas of coaching to learning ocular surgery. We cover a range of topics and come up with our best ideas for becoming a better surgeon, committing to life-long surgical learning, and benefitting from coaching whether from another surgeon or from self-coaching.
