Stephen M.R. Covey - Trust and Inspire

Smiling nearly the entire podcast, Covey clearly loves what he calls his purpose, which is to increase trust and inspiration in the world today. Writing his first book 16 years ago, he found his inspiration because of the absence of these qualities and a lack of reliable content on the subject. With the only constant being change, it’s clear a disruption is needed since the paradigm of how we view leadership is still coming from the industrial age era. So, what’s the number one barrier to becoming a trust and inspire leader? Believing oneself is already one. Instead of living down to distrust, modeling the behaviors that embody trust and inspiration is the first step in becoming a true leader. Clearly, trusting everyone is not wise. However, discontinuing the current cycle of distrust in our society is the first step to transforming the leadership style. Covey explained, “It’s a blending of heart with head … to try to find a sweet spot using good judgement of where to trust and how much to trust.” With so many distractions in the digital world, how does one inspire? Traditionally and still seen today, motivation and rewards are given, which is extrinsic and will leave people craving more. Instead, Covey recommended leaders connect with people and purpose and create a sense of caring and belonging. The payoff? Inspired employees are noted to be 56% more productive than engaged ones.
