Now, though, she has to process this shocking discovery without the aid of her friends. Her love, Pleyel, thinks that she is a wanton woman who is having midnight trysts with Carwin. As if this weren't bad enough, Pleyel has discovered that Carwin is a wanted man, guilty of murder and larceny in Ireland.  Clara attempts to clear her name, but it's to no avail. Pleyel is unmoved.
