The UK and Iran: beyond the JCPOA?

21 Mar 2021

Description

In 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, including the United Kingdom, back in 2015. Here in the UK, the government’s priority remains to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability, to promote stability and security in the region, secure the release of our dual- nationals, and to keep the diplomatic door open for discussions across the full range of UK interests. So, what can the West do now to fix its troubled relationship with Iran and how best to proceed in the interests of peace in the region and further afield? To discuss the current state of play, CMEC talks to Dr Sanam Vakil, Deputy-Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House and Bob Seely, Conservative MP for the Isle of Wight and a prominent member of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, which late last year published its report on the UK's relationship with Iran, entitled, "No prosperity without justice."
