She is a former Guggenheim fellow and has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the California Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. She is the author of numerous award-winning books such as That Woman That Never Evolved, Mother Nature, Mothers and Others, and her most recent, Father Time.
