Since Bob Kane and Bill Finger created the first Batman comic in 1939, the character of Batman has appeared in a vast variety of films, graphic novels, and television shows, each with a unique author, speaking to different audiences at different historical moments. Standing as a "dark" contrast to DC comics Superman, the initial version of Batman portrayed the role of violent vigilante, at times blurring the line between hero and villain, in search of vengeance.
