IT is the high-security jail where Christy Kinahan snr and his two sons are likely to be held if they are ever extradited to Ireland.Portlaoise Prison is the State’s only maximum security jail and is protected by a detachment of armed soldiers who patrol the complex for 24 hours a day.The Defense Forces were drafted in to guard the prison after a number of escape attempts by IRA members in the 1970s.But now, as well as housing the country’s most dangerous paramilitaries, the prison service may have to cope with the leadership of a well-resourced drugs cartel.I’m Niall Donald and today I’m talking to Eamon Dillon about the security measures in Portlaoise prison and Christy Kinahan snr’s previous say in the jail.
