When we've been writing and talking about the Connors organised crime gang for many, many years was how high a level that they are actually involved in drugs trafficking.
And the raids that happened last week painted a bit of a picture between connections between very close associates of the dead man and they're being looked at for their role in actually the transportation side of huge, huge amounts of drugs that are coming into the country. I'm Nicola Tallent and this is Crime World, a podcast about criminals, drugs and the sins of the underworld.
If you like this podcast and want to learn more about crime, go to our new website www.crimeworld.com for stories, extras and podcast subscriber specials. A trafficking gang with links to jailed criminal Lee Cullen was the target of a major Garda operation where 27 properties were searched last week.
More than 1.7 million worth of drugs were seized in a major blow to one of the country's most prolific organised crime gangs. Today I'm talking to Crime World's Ken Foy about how the mob is made up of an unholy alliance of fat Andy Connors and Cullen's associates. I'm Niall Donald and this is Crime World, a podcast from crimeworld.com.
So we had one of the most significant operations targeting organised crime of the year, but probably even of the last 12 months, last week, targeting a gang primarily based in the Wicklow, Dublin area. A major operation, I think it was 27 properties in total were raided. And there was a number of seizures of...
you know, goods, luxury goods, and also really the nuts and bolts of the cocaine trade. It's a big operation really, isn't it? Yeah, it was. It spanned three counties over three days last week, Nile, Dublin, Wicklow and Mead. And as you say, 27 properties were
were raided just under 1.7 million euro worth of drugs were seized mostly cocaine but also heroin and cannabis a load of designer clothes and that kind of stuff was also got as well as cash and very significantly a number of vehicles were searched and it took a lot of searching but what's called hides

Chapter 2: What major operation targeted the organised crime gang linked to Lee Cullen?
But he was never really known as... been involved in the drugs trade. Admittedly, now we're associated with some of those people at the very end. So that is a new development, I would TJ, TJ, TJ O'Mahony. Spring has sprung and so have the savings at TJ O'Mahony. Transform your outdoor space with paving flags from just $3.95 each and fence panels starting at $32.95.

TJ's all you need to get the job done. Yes, it is. And obviously Fat Andy was murdered, unsolved, but it's all to do with money rows surrounding people that would also be associated with Lee Cullen back in 2014.
And it wasn't clear... and we've been writing and talking about the Connors organised crime gang for many, many years, was how high a level that they are actually involved in drugs trafficking. And the raids that happened last week painted a bit of a picture between connections between...
very close associates of the dead man and their role within... They're being looked at for their role in actually the transportation side of huge amounts of drugs that are coming into the country. Because this...
this new gang and you know they believe to be a nationwide gang involved in supplying gangs including Barry Young at times for example in Sligo and they seem to be based not just in Ireland but they have ties to the UK and to Spain as well Very much so. They operate a number of car businesses, both in the UK and Spain. One of the main figures, he's a veteran criminal.
I'd be very close to Lee Cullen. He's actually based in Spain. I wouldn't say he fled Ireland, but he left Ireland many years ago. And it seems it's very obvious he's been pulling strings from there as well. And despite all the heat on the Kinnahan cartel, it's... they do still have a Spanish operation.
And it's that side of things that seem to be involved in ensuring that large shipments of drugs are getting here. So you do see that, of course, because there are, I think, two or three of the really
key members of the Canadian cartel still based in Spain and one of them in particular very much said to be involved in the cannabis business but while they might operate at that level this gang is maybe even sourcing stuff from them but they control their own operation within Ireland they're not taking directions at that point Yeah, and that's what they do.
And actually, they're not involved and haven't been for a very long time in any gangland murders. Despite the fact that there's teenagers in this mob, there's also OAPs. And I think there's a general view, and maybe it's kind of a general view all around organized crime in Ireland now, is that murder is bad for business.

Chapter 3: How did the Gardaí execute the raids and what was seized?
So that's one kind of thing that they don't get involved in. Yeah, so we had, as you said, it was curious, there's no arrests because of the major seizures, but it may show that this is a much bigger operation for Gardaí than going in and maybe seizing a bit of cocaine and taking out a couple of...
a couple of people that were transporting it or whatever, it shows probably that this is a bigger plan, isn't it? And this is the first step to bringing this gang down. Yes, and obviously with Niall, with all these things, there'll be a massive trawl of forensic devices and all that kind of thing. So as you say, they're in no rush to... to pull people out.
They probably had enough evidence possibly to make a couple of arrests at least but maybe they're probably keeping their powder dry. They probably are and probably looking to bring maybe more serious charges maybe to do with we're only presuming but maybe to do with organised crime offences. That's an educated guess let's put it that way. I would think so. Yeah.
Okay Ken no doubt we'll be coming back to them and we'll see how this investigation develops. Thanks very much mate. TJ, TJ, TJ O'Mahony Spring has sprung and so have the savings at TJ O'Mahony. This six-part anniversary special revisits that fateful day when David Byrne was shot dead at the Northside Hotel, igniting a bloody feud between the Kinahan and Hutch gangs, one of the deadliest rivalries in Irish history. Here's a taste of the new series, exclusive to CrimeWorld.com subscribers. So that Friday was one of those really quiet days.
I mean, everybody, we all knew that Daniel Kinahan was in Dublin for the Clash of the Clans boxing weigh-in. At least we knew he was due into Dublin the next day. That Clash of the Clans bout match had been heavily advertised by... But the day itself was, there was just little going on. So there was very little happening that day. It's February.
It's kind of a quiet enough time for news in general. And Alan Cherry and Ernie Leslie were on the road. They were at another story, actually, in Finglas. What was that, do you remember? Well, it was one of these classic sort of district court stories where a guy had, I think some teenagers had thrown stones at his car and he got out and slapped the teenager.

Chapter 4: What role did surveillance play in the Gardaí's operation?
But we knew this is a once in a lifetime photograph has been gotten. Yeah, as soon as it came in. And of course, you know, look, the newsroom, newsrooms aren't as busy as they used to be. They used to be very busy, buzzy places with phones ringing everywhere. And it felt like a proper newsroom that day. I remember Everybody's phone was going. People were hearing little bits about it.
It was the news was starting to break about it. And of course, we were there sitting in the office with this photo. There is that sort of new sense in you that you want to run this. Yeah. And at the time, we weren't putting stuff up online. This would have been held for the paper on the Sunday. And this is a Friday afternoon. We had something really special here.
But we also, I think, knew the guards were going to be desperate for that picture because they were two gunmen running from a scene of a crime. So it was a very compromised situation and there was a bit of arguments going on. And there was a, you know, voices were raised. Totally. I mean, because it is complex.
I mean, normally the journalism likes to keep itself separate from the Garda investigations. So Garda investigations go on and journalism reports on them. But obviously then you're put in this compromising position because you have guys running out visibly with handguns in their hands. And, you know, they're obviously then disappeared into the ether. And you have...
Certainly you have to have a discussion about what is your civic responsibility in terms of do you help the guards, you don't want these armed gunmen to run down the street and kill another few people. So it was a complex one and people were aware straight away that the guards are going to want these pictures and want to use it for their purposes.
And we also have our purposes, which is to tell what happened and to report on the news. So there was a conflict straight away. From my memory, as the afternoon went on and, you know, I was talking to contacts and to other people who were involved in crime journalism, etc. It became apparent that there were no guards at the weigh-in. That in actual fact, the guards didn't seem to be there at all.
They were called literally by the hotel and had arrived in response to what had already gone on. Of course, David Byrne had been shot dead in the... In the reception of the hotel we were getting photographs in later in the day which showed a very shocked looking Liam Byrne standing outside the hotel, his hands in his pockets.
standing beside his cousin, Liam Rowe, another significant cartel member. There was no sign of Daniel Kinahan. I was getting calls from people who were telling me that these professional killers had been flown into the country and had already been flown out.
There was rumours, there was spin, and also there was the general, I suppose, conversations in regards to, oh my God, what is going to happen next? I mean, all anyone knew for sure was something was going to happen. David Byrne was a very, very senior lieutenant. He was also from criminal royalty, from the Byrne family. His brother-in-law is Thomas Balmer Kavanagh.
