When I mention the criteria for a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder in the DSM-5, I only speak about criterion A and not criteria B, C, D, or E. I should have clarified. Onanism can also mean coitus interruptus. Regarding symptoms as having a meaning, I wanted to speak to how they can be thought of as attempting to propel one forward. Jung said "A sign, a symptom or an illness are always seen as attempts by the self to make itself known. They are purposeful and have a clear objective which is to unite that which is divided."
