Sugar on its own cannot cause tooth decay. This podcast challenges the idea that sugar is the only cause of tooth decay. It offers ways to halt and even reverse cavities, with methods you can use at home. You eat sugary or starchy foods. Bacteria in your mouth feed on these, releasing acids as a byproduct. The acid attacks your tooth enamel, which is made of minerals like calcium and phosphate. This weakens the enamel. Ideally, saliva washes away food particles and neutralizes the acid. Minerals from your saliva and food can then rebuild (remineralize) the enamel. However, if the acid attack is too frequent or intense, demineralization wins, leading to cavities.
