0010 - The Game Chat with Ruth and Allen

10 Jun 2020

Description

In this session we play the "Four Games" exercise. The exercise simply involves responding to the statement (think of it as a question) in which you choose and then talk about and explain why you will play four chosen games again:a card or board gamea video gamea physical sports gameand a business gamificationWe'll provide some pointers for running the exercise yourself at the end of the podcast.[recording of Ruth and Allen's discussion]Our goal with the "Four Games" exercise is to start a process of thinking about games in a deep way. We start by reflecting on some games that are personal to you. Get you to talk about some games that remain (or were) influential in your life. I'm pretty certain we will all learn something new and we will start playing with the topic itself. What makes a game a game? Does a game have to be fun? When is a game? What makes a game different from other parts of life? Why do we play games? What do games add to life? What is game's role in society? Are even single player games social? These and many more questions. If you're going to run the exercise yourself we recommend preparing by writing a short letter to a friend that answers the four prompts. Think of it as a script, written as a conversation, as if you are preparing to record the talk for our next podcast. But, and this is important, the script is just a way preparing yourself. We don't actually want you to read it it out. That approach tends to suck the spontaneity and liveliness out of speech. Do the prep, underline or highlight keywords, then find a friend to ask the questions. Your thoughts will flow, and it will be much more interesting for your audience to listen to later. Sure, you'll make some mistakes but it'll be more fun. Plus you can always edit it in post-production with Audacity or some other tool.Acknowledgement/Credits:Music mix Cold Funk - Funkorama by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Artist: http://incompetech.com/The `Design Talk dot ie’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license (aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
