Vinay Lal’s book, 'Insurgency and the Arts : The Art of the freedom struggle in India' is an important work written on modern India’s most turbulent moments during its freedom struggle from 1857to 1948. With hundreds of rare paintings and sketches, this volume talks about the artistic expressions of the nation's struggle for freedom. Vinay Lal, professor of history in the University of California, Los Angeles, talks to Dilli Dali in an hour long conversation on how the political and cultural imaginations of the various phases of ‘insurgency’ were shaped and fuelled by the artistic output of the time.
