Faux self-care: are we being fooled by the wellness industry?

07 Jun 2025

Description

You’ve probably seen the ads for products and services that promise to make you happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. Things like journals, air purifiers, crystal jewellery, and of course, bubble baths. These are all examples of what some experts call ‘faux self-care’: the idea that we can buy our way out of stress, burnout, and depression. It’s also based on the idea that we are responsible for our own wellbeing, and that we shouldn’t expect or demand care from others. This is especially true for women, who are often expected to juggle multiple roles and responsibilities without complaining or asking for help. But does faux self-care really work, or does it make us feel worse in the long run? And how can we practise real self-care? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions!
