What is Yentl Syndrome?

10 Dec 2021

Description

What is Yentl Syndrome? You may have already heard about examples of sexist bias in medicine. Well Yentl Syndrome is a perfect demonstration of how women and men sometimes receive different medical treatment. American cardiologist Bernadine Healy, a former President of the National Institutes of Health, came up with the name in 1991, as the title of a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine. To sum up, her evidence seemed to suggest that men were taken more seriously than women when claiming to be sick. Where does the name come from? How exactly does the treatment differ? How have things changed in recent years? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: What is Ghostbusters? What is an Advent calendar?
