The influence cliques have over young children, teenagers and insecure adults can lead them into all kinds of social dilemmas that cause enormous anxiety, alienation and grief to relationships lost and gained through loyalty. Loyalty is stupidity at its worst. To thoughtlessly do things because it makes us belong has a far more negative potential than positive. Rugged individualism is the American Dream.
