Gender Equity in Science, Fixing Broken Jaws, and Concussion

Dr Shane and co-hosts Dr Linden, Dr Ray and Dr Stacey talk about dead robot spiders; alternative, science-y, ways to use fibre cables; and a new study shining a light on gender and race bias in some areas of medicine. Then, Dr Olga Panagiotopoulou from the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology at Monash Uni shares her research into finding better ways to fix broken, sensible bones, like a jaw. She explains to the team how she uses in vivo experiments and computer simulations to help engineers designing and optimizing fixation techniques. And Associate Professor Bridgette Semple from the Department of Neuroscience at Monash explains how she's looking into concussion from sport injuries and possible long-lasting risks, especially from injuries sustained in childhood. Recent studies show that the current treatment options trying to mitigate these long-lasting effects are insufficient, so, Dr Bridgette is looking at alternative solutions, focusing on the inflammation patterns in the brain following concussions.Dr Shane and both guests then discuss gender equity issues in science and academia, implications on careers, research and funding opportunities.
