Energy Explained

In Short 5: How does lack of control affect the control room?

04 Jun 2024

Description

As the renewable energy sector continues to expand, ensuring efficient and reliable operation of power plants is more important than ever. This crucial aspect of the energy sector happens behind the scenes, in spaces we don't often see in the news. It's not the new biggest turbine being developed, an alternative use for wind turbine blades, or a flashy technology like PtX (also known as P2X or Power-to-X), which often makes it to the news. Even if you don't often see it, the behind-the-scenes is essential to ensure reliable and controllable energy, and that's exactly what control room operators are tasked to do in a renewable power plant. However, renewable energies are fluctuating sources that are known for being uncontrollable. So, how does lack of control affect the control room? In this episode of the Energy Explained: In Short series, we navigate control room challenges in renewable power plants with the help of our guest Nick Hess, Key Account Manager at SCADA International and previously control room operator for an OEM.
