What is Learning by Teaching (German: Lernen durch Lehren)? Lernen durch Lehren (Learning by Teaching) is a teaching method that involves students in the process of teaching a subject to others. The approach is based on the idea that the act of teaching promotes deeper understanding and retention of knowledge. In a Lernen durch Lehren setting, students are assigned the task of presenting and teaching a portion of the course material to their peers. This can take the form of group presentations, individual mini-lessons, or other forms of peer instruction. By assuming the role of the teacher, students are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning and to engage in reflection and critical thinking. The method is used across a range of subjects and has been shown to be effective in promoting student motivation, engagement, and achievement. Developed by Jean-Pol Martin in the 1980s, the LDL approach similar to the protégé effect.
