Total Physical Response (TPR) Teaching Method Explained w/ Example Class!
13 Mar 2023
What is the total physical response method? Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method that uses physical movement and gestures to facilitate language learning. It involves the teacher giving commands in the target language, and students responding with physical actions. This method gradually introduces new vocabulary and grammar structures, and focuses on the development of listening and speaking skills. TPR is effective for young learners and beginners, and is often used as a support method in the classroom. In the Teaching Methodology Exposed series, we take a look at notable language-teaching methods which have influenced us and wider education. We, as educational professionals, explain the history and rationale behind these methodologies and analyze a real class example to better weigh each method's pros and cons as an effective teaching approach.
