The UK's current single-price electricity system is inefficient, leading to wasted renewable energy and higher costs for consumers. A proposed zoned system would allow local authorities to better match renewable energy production with demand, resulting in lower electricity prices in areas with high renewable energy generation and higher prices in areas with high demand but less renewable energy. However, some energy companies fear that a zoned system would lead to price volatility and risk for renewable energy investors. Original article is also available in English on my Medium page, «Renewables are changing the UK’s energy map: time to rethink its pricing system?»
