REDIFF - Figure incontournable de la résistance algérienne face à la conquête française, l'émir Abd el-Kader ne fut pas seulement un chef de guerre. Stratège redoutable, il fédéra les tribus et opposa une résistance acharnée avant de se rendre en 1847. Exilé en France, il gagna le respect de Napoléon III, qui le libéra en 1852. Réfugié en Syrie, il s'illustra en 1860 en protégeant les chrétiens de Damas, prouvant que son combat était avant tout guidé par l'honneur et la foi.
