Whew…this has been a recent intense journey w/a client who reached out to me a couple months ago with a "911" call about his personal life, his family & his job. His house is (at the time of this episode) still on fire…BUT…HE is no longer on fire like he was 2 mos ago. "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at begin to change." He has grown SO much over the past 2 mos b/c when he reached out to me, he took full ownership of the areas of his life he desperately needed to fix/change. He was crying & completely at wits end on our first phone call. This was a guy who may have only cried once or twice in his entire life. Very unemotional. Very detached & disconnected from his emotions (which was actually part of the problem). He was in such a different headspace on our most recent phone call. He was calm, present, almost peaceful…even though, for all intents & purposes, his house is still on fire…but he's not. He has been consistently doing the emotional fitness exercises over the past couple months, and as a result, is equipped & encouraged as he faces his challenges. Here is one of the EQ exercises I had him do that he found very helpful: Write out as many different Courses Of Action (COAs) that "might" happen. Then write out the following for each possible COA: Thoughts Emotions Behaviors Solutions He did the exercise & there was an entirely different COA he hadn't even thought of. He recounted that even though he hadn't thought of that particular scenario, because he had worked through the thoughts, emotions & solutions of the other similar scenarios, he was able to face the new COA calm, steady, safely & predictably. He said it was life changing. I am so grateful to help leaders be the best version of themselves.
