Book Bits: Libraries Under Attack

In this Book Bits Episode, Lisa discusses the ways libraries have been attacked during Pride Month. Libraries’ funding has been threatened and libraries have been victims of hate crimes.  Book Riot addresses a wide range of attacks on libraries during Pride month.  ·      A Maryland Librarian arrested for spray-painting groomer on two libraries, according to numerous publications including numerous publications. He e confessed to spray-painting “groomer,” a homophobic slur on two Prince George’s County public libraries. According to an NPR report, old accusations of LGBTQ people “grooming” and “recruiting” children have gained new traction. ·      Book Riot describes a protest in Montana: “In Montana, people are complaining that the state library association’s new logo is offensive because (wait for it) it has the colors red, blue, yellow, and green.” This article shows an image of the proposed new logo.  ·      Leaders in southeast Alaska are considering cutting library funding over the library’s story time event hosted by a drag queen.  ·      The library board for the Jennings Public Library in Indiana voted that the Pride display be removed Jennings Public Library is in North Vernon Indiana, which is in southern Indiana.  ·         There were complaints about the library’s pride display in Macon County in Franklin, N.C.  and authorities did not agree to increase funds in light of the pride display. ·      Proud Boys protesters interrupted a drag story time in the San Francisco, Calif.
