Everyone Loved It But Me

The Paris Wife

22 Dec 2021

Description

Lisa and her guest Scheffie Lindquist have an entertaining and fun conversation about The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, which is a historic fiction book about Ernest Hemingway’s marriage with Hadley Richardson. There will be spoilers in the book.  McLain writes about how she read letters from Earnest and Hadley and her extensive research was utilized in this book. The Cleveland Plain Dealer described McLain’s masterful way that she portrayed Hadley’s pain in the book. However, The New York Times writes that the book’s dialogue has some clichés.  The Guardian says this book is  more of a risky affair than its sugary surface portrays. Indeed, the book delves into how Hemingway fell in love with his second wife while still married to Hadley. Vogue writes an article about Hemingway’s second wife -  Pauline and how she’s often villainized. There is still discussion and debate about Hemingway’s mental health issues. In his book, Hemingway's Brain, Andrew Farah wrote that due to his many traumas he wasn’t suffering from bipolar disorder or manic depression. He believes he suffered from brain injuries  triggered by multiple concussions.  Books Mentioned on the show:  Calypso by David SedarisHolidays on Ice by David Sedaris. This includes his famous story about working as a elf for Santa.Spindle by W.R.
