As always, please listen closely to our spoiler warning. Every episode, including this one, has spoilers for all of The Ballad of Falling Dragons and, of course, book one, When the Moon Hatched. We have our first scavenger king POV and it is laden with Easter eggies and foreshadowing ease.
So please, if you don't know what he means when he says he's got plans to aid against the moon falls, then go finish the book. We will be here when you're done. Next, and I need you all to listen extra closely for this one today. We, Fantasy Fangirls, are adults who say very adult things about adult books and especially very adult scenes.
In other words, friends, this podcast and especially today's episode is rated R. There are certain...

Chapter 2: How does Raeve's relationship with Liri evolve in this episode?
But friends, if you remember, Nicole, one of the many, many, many, many bets that she lost was that she has to wear a dragon onesie for a whole episode, and we agreed this would be the absolute perfect one. So, Nicole... She already had a dragon onesie, as one fantasy fangirls does. But it's all packed up. I have three. You have three dragon onesies. So they're all in parts of the movie.
And she decided to tell me at the last second, oh, no, I can't do it because they're all packed. Y'all, I have next day shipping. So I made sure to get her the most obnoxious one I could find. And I'm sorry, Nicole, it's also a few sizes too small as well.
Chapter 3: What insights do we gain from the Scavenger King’s POV?
Oh, yeah. Because it was the only one that would fit. shift to you as quickly as possible. So yay. Hi dragon. My favorite part is actually multiple things about this outfit. One, the ears, they collapse very, very quickly. So I had to put some scrunchies. on the ears over here to make them stand up and be, you know, nice and erect for this moss episode, if you will.
And my other favorite part is that you didn't skimp on the tail, which as we've known from when I lost another bet when I had to wear a dragon onesie through an airport and travel day, I was sitting on a tail on an airplane for hours. And you know what? This is a little better, but not by much.
To start off every episode, let's get a parchment lark delivery where Nicole does us the honor of summarizing what happens in chapters 32 through 44 of Ballad of Falling Dragons. Nicole, I'm going to need some animation here too for all the dragon parts, okay? Chapter 32.
thirty-two the scavenger king arkin sits on his throne of lies while he watches over his subjects and by subjects i mean the poor unfortunate souls who are forced to fight for his entertainment but he's not the only one watching no no no tri council member anir is here and he drops Interesting facts. Number one, the Tri Council is buddy buddies with the twins.
Number two, they desperately need the untapped bloodstone in the burn. And number three, they don't believe Aachen is strong enough to take down Khan or that he is actually the legitimate son of Auster and Vagor. But they are willing to make a deal. And if the price is right, they will let him take the bronze crown. Chapter 33, rave. She's going up, up, up.

Chapter 4: How does Kaan support Raeve during her struggles?
it's her moment hoping the dragon will kill her she's climbing the super high pillar it's long i'm not continuing but rave makes it before her limbs give out and oh how cute leary is sleeping oh spoke too soon leary is now awake jumps off the pillar but rave thinks quick and jumps after her maybe not the brightest idea that rave has had but whatever and this did work Kinda.
Rave is now holding onto the saddle ropes for dear life, but that's okay. She's in the perfect spot to undo one of the buckles and remove Leary's saddle forever. There's only one slight problem now. Rave is in free fall, hurtling towards the ground. Chapter 34, Rave. Thankfully, Leary doesn't want to see Rave go splat on the ground, but she breaks her But the ride isn't quite over yet.
They crash land a little too close to a daddy molten ma who does not like hosting strangers at family dinner. Honestly, understandable. Leary allows for Rave to hop on her back, but as they go to leave, the Bucks family shows up, and now everyone is deep in their feels. Chapter 35, Rave. Leary takes off, forgetting that Rave is on her back, and she flies high, high, high. into the mountains.
Poor girl just needs a moment to herself. But unfortunately, Rave also hitched a ride. So this is an awkward Uber. Rave understands exactly how Leary is feeling. So she does the first thing she can think of to calm her down. She sings the song to Leary. And Leary appreciates Rave's comfort, and she pulls her in for a cuddle. Oh, but that's not the only bonding these two do.
With Slaughter's blessing, Rave and Leary begin to bond. Chapter 36, Kazari. Grind, grind, grind, and it's done. The bone picks are perfect. Kazari is digging away at her shackle when Nii suddenly tucks and rolls out of sight. The scavenger king is here. Dun, dun, dun. And he's finally ready to check up on his prisoner. He's got a goal today. Remove all hope. What a gem of a human being.
And I'm not just talking about the bone picks.

Chapter 5: What significant moments occur during the dragon bonding process?
He's after me, too. So after giving Kazari a lark from Daddy Dearest, a.k.a. Tyroth Vagor, Arkin grabs me and with two hands, rips.
the lark in half chapter 37 khan khan has been busy as one does when you don't want to think about the possible danger your significant other is in so he's been underground helping build a bunker for the village but he hasn't been up to the surface well since coming down here and his auntie is pissed even though she's due any day now she traversed the one
thousand steps to check up on him and give him the 411 on Rave and Leary. They've been spotted in the area, and there's no sign of them coming back. Chapter 38, Rave. Rave has fallen into this animalistic state. She finds this way easier. She doesn't have to deal with all her gross emotions. Valid. But Khan wants his woman back. So what does he do?
Strips naked, starts humming Rave's calming tune like one does. And if that doesn't lure her, I don't know what will. All the while, Leary ignores them and keeps eating bear hunt. Honestly, mood. I love that for her. Chapter 39, Khan. Rave just wants to fuck. And I mean, who doesn't? But Khan refuses while Rave is all anarchist.
He makes a deal she must use her words and help put both of them out of their misery. And it works! After a while, she says his name.

Chapter 6: What challenges do Raeve and Kaan face as the moonfalls approach?
Huzzah! Rave lets it slip that Slaughter is somewhere deep inside of her. Like, Khan wants to be deep inside of her. But that's a conversation for later. Because there's a different issue we need to fix first. Chapter 40. Rave. Face down. Ass up. That's the way they like to... Fuck or bang, bang, bang, bang. I said, grab something moonbeam and don't let go. Bang.
Actually, she grabs onto some crevices in the rocks to be specific. And then the moss is touching her boobies. Thank you. Chapter 41. Rave, would you like to continue? No, no, please. This is your section, Nicole. Come on, dragon. You got this. It's the next morning and Khan is cooking and Rave is deliciously sore, but also the bond has settled between her and Leary. Yay!
No more primal rave, though after that sex, I don't know if I should be bummed about that or not. Not to ruin the moment or anything, but Khan has a very important question for Rave. Why are you afraid of fire? Shit timing, my guy. But he's not the only one with shit timing. Saharna has gone into labor. Chapter 42. Khan, hearing his auntie in labor, is taken a toll.
Khan can't bear to lose someone else he loves to pregnancy. This calls for a distraction. Oh, boy!
Chapter 7: How does the episode explore themes of love and vulnerability?
In exchange for um-num-num-num-num-ing on the memory of Veya's birth, Borg shares what he knows. A new moon shard has been spotted in the nest of a broody pink molten maw. Oh, and Elowen Navon went to Tyroth willingly. Womp womp. Chapter 43. Rave. New info alert. Khan gives Rave his bonding story with Raigon and why the dragon hates the mist.
And while Khan is opening up to Rave, she starts braiding her hair. For what? I'm so glad you asked! Her ulu! Meaning that Khan is officially off the market! I'm so sorry, Lexi. Rave is not the only one giving gifts, though. Khan had custom riding leathers made for Rave, so she will always be warm and protected on her moonplume fucking swoon.
But the cute moment ends when Pyrock decides that he needs a distraction from Saharna's labor. Let the drinking game commence! Chapter 44, Veya. Veya stumbles through the cold, flat, never-ending Igor Plains, and it's not looking so good for our girl. Taking a moment to pause, Veya can tell something is wrong with her shoulder wound.
After a painful moment digging out the shard that was lodged in there, Veya decides to cauterize her wound like brother, like sister. Right when she thinks that she's going to get a moment of peace, three cowls sent her. Thankfully, she's not far from a small cave where she's able to find shelter before falling into unconsciousness.
All right, friends, we are so excited to continue diving into this episode. But first, a quick word from our sponsors. It is time to listen to the elemental songs to explore key insights, character analysis, lore, foreshadowing theories, and oh, so much more. And today we are kicking it off with our first ballot chapter in the Scavenger Kings POV.
Before we get into what happens, I do want to quickly address the fact that Arkan's chapters are in third person POV, unlike most other POVs like Rave, Khan, Vea, Pyrock, and Grimm. This is a very strategic move on Sarah's part. to distance the reader from this character. With first person POVs, we are automatically in their head.
We are meant to experience what they do, feel from their perspective. While of course their person can and does provide this more intimate experience as well, the way that the Scavenger Kings chapters are purposefully different from other POVs is a signal to us readers to create some separation with this character. It also makes him other.

Chapter 8: What foreshadowing hints are present for future chapters?
It separates him from the rest of the cast of characters in the story that we are rooting for. Yes, Slotcha's chapters are also in third person, and Sarah is signaling us with her, too, that there is some separation. With her, though, it's because she is a dragon. She literally thinks differently, has a different perspective on the world than the Fae. Well, when it comes to Arkan...
It's because he is the villain. He is different from the other Fae characters and he is an outcast. That's for us readers to feel with him too. I'm not going to lie. I really love when authors make this choice to put a certain character in third person. I like it when it's like everyone else is in first person, like you were saying. It adds this extra layer of...
what the fuck I need to lean in for those chapters. It's also a really big difference in writing style. Speaking like, you know, from an author standpoint for a second, like the author cannot directly come out and say what the character is feeling because we're not fully immersed in their head. Like we are with rave.
So instead we get more of those show, not tell moments, things like how Arkin drums, his, you know, chewed up fingers on the throne or how he like draws a long sip of his drink. It shows us how he's feeling, but it also gives us that distance to infer how he's feeling because he's not the main character. And we don't get to know that yet. I love first person.
Don't get me wrong because you're so deep in their head. And for me, it's easier to connect with them. But I love when third persons are sprinkled in because that alone is that hint for us that we're supposed to be looking over his shoulder and reading between the lines in those particular chapters.
Yes, I think that most of the time when an author chooses first person or third person, there is a very good reason for that. And like, for instance, I know with my story, I have a very, very important reason that it is in third person and not first person. So let's set the scene because we are officially at the fighting pits.
Arcann sits above the pits of Kyn Dard watching in satisfaction as the fights rage on below. His battle pits are the grandest in the world, known for their savage shows, flowing refreshments, and wild debauchery. The crowd is going wild. Remember, the scavenger king, aka Arcann Vagor,
is the oldest but illegitimate son of austrin vagor he is the son of a knoll woman and had a shit childhood to put it very mildly forced to be a servant he is also the one who imprisoned rave after she and sloucher fell where he did everything he could to break her and turn her into the fire-lark
But all of this with the fighting pits and this legacy that he has built for himself, it's only the means to an end. Arkin wants the Burns crown for himself. That is his end goal. He believes that it is his birthright and he will stop at nothing to get it. And most importantly, he wants Con Vagor dead. Like, dead, dead, dead.
