The Football Daily Podcast. At the People World Cup 2026. With Rick Edwards and Lloyd Griffith.
Hello, you're listening to the Football Daily with me, Rick Edwards. And me, Lloyd Griffith. Griffith. Slight hesitation there. It's Griffith, isn't it? Sorry, I do get it wrong. It's Griffith, yeah. Griffith. Quick round-up of the scores for you. Argentina beat Austria 2-0. Guess who scored the goals? France. Don't, actually. France beat Iraq 3-0. Guess who scored two of the goals?
Don't, actually. And Norway beat Senegal 3-2. Guess who scored two? Don't. We are recording before the late game. Jordan, Algeria. But all the scores and highlights will be available... on the BBC Sport website and app. Now, you're probably wondering at home, what level of comfort are these two at with each other now? You know, two weeks in, living together, working together.
We'll put it this way. Without being asked, today I hung all of your pants out to dry that you'd left in the washing machine. But the really weird thing is I was fine with it. I just sort of saw them and I was like, oh, Lloyd's forgotten to hang these out.
I'll do that for him.
You know what's even weirder is I haven't done any washing today, so producer Lizzie, are you happy with Rick Edwards touching your smalls? I mean, listen, they're not smalls. They were mine. I wear skims exclusively. Other brands are available. Yeah. I did see that, and it was very nice. Yeah, interesting. You did see it, but you didn't say anything about it. You just took it as read.

Chapter 2: How did France secure their dramatic win over Iraq?
Right.
Okay. So in the... Hollywood star. Hollywood star.
Yeah. Bought me lunch. Bought me lunch.
Indirectly. Okay. Got to emphasize indirectly. Tom Cruise. No, but... You know, it's not a million miles off that kind of level.
Okay.
Actor? Yeah. But actually sort of like triple threat, I'd say. Maybe even quadruple threat. I mean, the whole lot. Actor, can sing, been to prison. Yeah, that's right. Okay. I'm going to say Jack Black.
no more impressive more impressive looks less much less like you Jack White looks less like me much I mean this guy I'm not saying he's not the opposite I've given you gender he's not the opposite of you but he's sort of maybe he is Will Smith much closer much closer Jamie Foxx yes what do I win I don't know. Okay. I think I would because Jamie Foxx bought me lunch. Indirectly. Indirectly.
And when he listens to this, and it is a word. And he will. He will. He'll be like, I won't do the... Please. I'm happy to do Scouts, but I won't do... Please.
I'll do it.

Chapter 3: What updates are there from the England camp ahead of their match?
Yes.
It's the 3C. Yeah. And cathedrals by rail. I'm doing that on my own. Oh, what? I am not letting you in on that. You want company on the train. Yeah, if I'm doing it, I'm doing it with Michael Portillo. I've obviously taken him. Him trains me cathedrals. I don't know. I was about to say, I'm not sure which commissioner, but I think we all know it's Channel 5.
So we were billing today as the day of the superstars, and it lived up to the hype. Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland all scoring two in their games. So that's four for Mbappe so far, four for Haaland, five for Messi, none for Cristiano Ronaldo, but he hasn't played his second game yet. He hasn't had a second game. Let's bring in from Five Lives EuroLeague's Julien Leron.
Hey, Julien, how are you doing?
Hey, guys, I'm doing great. Thank you. And you? Yeah, pretty good. Where are you? So we were in Philly for the game between France and Iraq with all the weather, the bad weather, the interruption. So I was supposed to take the train back down which was cancelled. So kindly, our Five Lives crew, so Pat Nevin, George Cummings, Ian Dennis, said, why don't you jump in with us? And we drive back.
So we drove back from... Road trip!
The Fun Bus!
That's good. I mean, road trip. Pat Nevin was the DJ. His playlist is awesome. Of course, obviously. Yeah, and it was lovely. It was really nice.
Who's designated driver there? Is it George?

Chapter 4: What humorous moments occurred with Rick and Lloyd during the episode?
Do you know what was really nice? If I'm going to nitpick. Do you know what was really nice? Just watching Lionel Messi miss a penalty and going, oh, I can actually do that. I can actually do what Messi's done. I can miss a penalty. I mean, maybe not on the world stage. But then he obviously scored a little bit later. What I loved, what I really loved, is how much it meant to the whole team.
And we've talked so many times this tournament about how in these teams you've got players that, are they individuals? Are they team players? Clearly, in the Argentinian team, he loves those players and those players love him. And you could see when he celebrated how much it meant, not just to him, but to the whole of the team.
I think it's brilliant. There's this lovely story, I mean, lovely story, in a way that shows you the status. The Argentines are two per rooms in their base camp, except Messi. Messi is the only one to have his own room just for him. He doesn't share with anybody. This is, you know, this is who he is. And you've seen all this footage of
the rest of the squad waiting for him at the end of the tunnel until he's there. And only once he's there, then he starts walking out and everybody follows behind. And it's just like that. I think this is a team where... They all play for him and he's the main guy. But he loves those guys who are there for him all the time and stuff.
Argentina have scored five goals in this tournament and Messi scored all of them. That kind of tells you everything you need to know.
And they're not playing great, you know, as well. That's the other thing. They're not playing great. Today was not a great performance collectively.
No, and it just kind of doesn't really matter when you've got that little man. The great thing about this tournament is we're seeing loads of goals. We're seeing big performances from big players. And although... these players, Messi, Haaland and Mbappe, they are playing for their teams. You get the sense that they are aware of what the others are doing, because of course they are.
And so when Messi goes and scores two goals, Mbappe then comes out and scores two goals. And then Haaland comes out and scores two goals. It's like they are having their own personal competition as well. And I like it.
I think it's amazing. It's amazing for us. I think it's great for the World Cup. Because like we said, that stage belongs usually to the best, to the greatest. Mbappe today, we saw him after the game and he said, you know, there's no race, no saga between me and Leo. And I'm not looking at what he does, which is not really true because as we know, they all check on, okay, where is who?

Chapter 5: How do Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland compare in this World Cup?
You mentioned Mbappe's goal-a-game ratio in the World Cup. Now, that is good. But he's no Dennis Undaff. Rick loves Undaff. I do. I just think, look, do you know his stats? He's scored three goals. Do you know what his goals per minute is? 11? No, he's not quite that good. It's a goal every 19 minutes. That's pretty decent. Killian's taken 19. Pathetic. No under.
Pathetic. And you know when his birthday is? No. On July 19th, the day of the final.
If that's not a good omen... Dennis Under scores a hat-trick on his birthday in the World Cup final.
Can you imagine?
We kind of assumed, and correctly, that today was going to be dominated by the superstars of world football. It was also slightly dominated by the weather. Now, you were there, and I've never... I've seen stuff interrupted for weather before. I don't think I've ever seen it interrupted for two hours and ten minutes. That's crazy.
Me neither. And I was there in 2012 when France played Ukraine in the Donbass Arena in the Euros 2012. And where the rain was crazy, they started the game somehow. They played five minutes, then it was stopped for an hour, then they finished the game on what?
was a quite waterlogged pitch but you know it was but that was a lot of rain today was something else man i have to say all day long we've had warnings about the thunderstorms are coming and at some point the game could be stopped but until it's there until you are told you need to go to shelter now because this is dangerous you don't really it's not that you don't believe but you want to see you want to see and that first half happened we even thought with deno on commentary and pad that
it was brightening up on the right side of the stadium. And actually, next thing we know, it's like, you need to evacuate, go somewhere safe inside. So now, here we are, filling the air with Crossman for two hours. I mean, we did a bit of politics, obviously, first. Not us, but, you know, the professionals. And then we talked about, okay, why is it to be in that kind of position?
But two hours is a long time, even for the players. And Deschamps was saying after the game, we played cards, we had a chat, and then every 20 minutes they said, yeah, yeah, you're going to be back soon. And then it was pushed backwards again and again and again. And it can't be easy, really. So credit to the players to still maintain a really good level in that second half.

My favourite World Cup moment? It's the first World Cup I properly remember watching. Argentina 78, the ticker tape, Mario Kempez, Harry Hahn scoring goals from miles out and always one of my favourite World Cup moments, Archie Gemmell's great goal for Scotland against the Dutch. What makes the World Cup such a special tournament is the atmosphere, the colour.

Chapter 7: What are the latest developments in the England vs. Ghana match?
And they were barking orders. Things like, we play as we train. We train as we play. Don't let the intensity drop. That's where that Jed Spence clip comes from that you might have seen doing the rounds on social media that I think Five Live actually put out. He wasn't afraid in front of the media of saying, Jed, you need to keep up with it.
And Jed Spence said after, oh, he's done that to all of us.
He kept saying, wake up, didn't he? Wake up, Jed, wake up.
It wasn't the most complimentary, but he did that in front of us. And I felt like that was a bit of a statement as well. That was him saying, yeah, yeah, we do the fun stuff, but we do the hard stuff as well.
Who have you been speaking to in the last few days from the team?
Oh, do you know, I've had a really good few days of interviews. No offense, not that I'm saying that there's bad interviews in the squad. Declan Rice on Saturday and Elliot Anderson on Sunday. And I mean, in terms of two influential players for England, like don't really get much better, do they? Declan says he's fit. I'm still not totally convinced, but he was charismatic as ever.
And Elliot Anderson's just incredibly humble and doesn't seem to realize quite how good he is.
When you say fit, is it the sunburn or something more serious than that?
Well, no, he didn't mention the sunburn until the end of the interview. And then he stopped and went, and I'm now killing him by revealing it. He stopped and lifted his T-shirt up and went, I'm really glad you didn't notice. Look, it's got me again, the sunburn, it's got me again. And I was like, unfortunately, I'm going to broadcast that somewhere, Dex, everyone's going to know.

Chapter 8: How did the podcast hosts engage with the audience about their experiences?
I'm going to put us all in the same bracket here, guys, sorry. Compared to all of us, they are young now. Footballers feel like they're getting younger as we're getting older. But he's a man of few words, but... Like I said to him, I said, did you notice the other day that all of the midfield came off apart from you? I think that shows how important you are to England.
He was like, yeah, I don't really thought about that. Like, yes, I suppose so. Like he just, he just feels like a kid that loves football, incredibly level headed, just had an amazing rise. Obviously he's had a difficult few months as well off the pitch too. But what a footballer, how lucky we are to have him. And there's loads of noise around him as well.
And he doesn't even seem to be that fazed by that. Yeah, we're very lucky, I think.
Have you, either of you, seen Steven Gerrard doing his England XI? One of the other broadcasters just going through. Okay, Pickford and then Konza, Gooey, and everyone's like, sorry, who? Gooey. I thought you'd got it wrong then.
Sorry, I was like, this is awkward.
Yeah, call him Gooey. Gooey. I don't know how he's got there, really. It might be a nickname. He knows it.
Is it a Scouse accent? Can you ask Lizzie if that's a Scouse accent?
Producer Lizzie? No, she's saying no. She seems angry, actually. Say Gooey in a Scouse accent. Gooey. Hey, I'm going with Gooey at the bath.
Oh, you have seen it?
