French President Emmanuel Macron spoke from the military base that hosts their country's ballistic missile submarines, saying to be free, one needs to be feared. He announced that France will increase its number of nuclear warheads, which is currently below 300. This will be the first time France increases its nuclear arsenal in at least 34 years. France is the only nuclear power in Europe.
Macron said he will also allow temporary deployment of their nuclear-armed aircraft to allied countries. And the talks about this posture change have begun with Britain, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden and Denmark. Jessica Rosenthal, Fox News.
Chapter 5: What impact is the conflict having on global oil prices?
The Cuban president is calling for urgent changes to the country's economic and business model as oil reserves in Cuba dwindle. This after the recent oil blockade coupled with a halt in shipments from Venezuela after the January mission that captured, the U.S. mission that captured the Venezuelan leader. Oil prices spiking as Iran launches retaliatory strikes.
Saudi Arabia shut down its largest refinery. It was hit by a drone. Qatar stopped all LNG production, and for oil sitting on ships currently at sea, insurance companies have canceled coverage. They think it's too risky to go through the Strait of Hormuz. Jorge Leon, RISAT Energy's head of geopolitical analysis, says that is causing prices to spike.
Out of the 15 million barrels per day, around 5 million barrels per day could potentially be diverted and bypassed the Strait.
Chapter 6: What are the latest stock market trends amid rising crude prices?
But still, that leaves us with a shortfall of 10 million barrels per day. That's 10% of global demand. Traders say the duration of the conflict is what affects prices most. Fox Business' Lauren Simonetti, crude surging over $70 a barrel, which ultimately affects gas prices in the U.S. Right now, stocks are mixed. The Dow's down 143, but the Nasdaq's up 36.
