Iran to tap a new leader. I'm Deborah Valentine, Fox News. The Assembly of Experts will convene today to select Iran's next supreme leader following the death of Ali Khamenei as Israel and the U.S. continue to strike Iran under Operation Epic Fury. Fox's Trey Inks reports from Tel Aviv. Mostaba Khamenei is the second son of Iran's former supreme leader. He's widely known as the shadow prince.
He was the gatekeeper for his father. He has strong ties to Iran's IRGC and also the Basij forces, who for years have been cracking down on demonstrators inside of the country. We know that during the 2009 Green Movement protests, it was Mostaba Khamenei who was reportedly leading much of the crackdown at the direction of of his father.
As the clerics gather and names are discussed for a possible successor to Iran's former supreme leader who was killed in Operation Epic Fury, this is the man who is considered to be the frontrunner. He's likely a candidate who would not be seen as a positive choice by the Trump administration or the Israelis.
Meanwhile, mixed messages as Iran's president says the country won't fire on its neighbors, but then launches strikes against a Dubai airport and a Saudi oil field. Fox's Greg Palcott is in Istanbul, Turkey with details.
Chapter 2: How are Iran's military actions affecting the Middle East?
One of Saudi Arabia's oil fields was targeted by over 20 Iranian drones. There's no confirmation of any impacts. And two more Iranian ballistic missiles were aimed at the Prince Sultan Air Base near Riyadh. That's where the U.S. Air Force has been based. Indications that the projectiles were intercepted.
As Iranian President Pazeshkin posted that video message, refusing President Trump's call for surrender, he seemed to apologize to neighboring countries for Iran's strikes. He claimed Iran wouldn't hit out unless attacked by other countries. An explosion rocked the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway, causing minor damage due to the entrance of the embassy's consular section.
