Vaughn undergoes surgery. I'm Carmen Roberts. Fox News. An Italian hospital said in a statement that doctors operated on American Olympic skier Lindsay Vaughn earlier today to stabilize a fracture in her leg. She broke that leg when she crashed just seconds into a downhill run at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The 41-year-old had come out of a nearly six-year retirement after having her knee replaced and already beat the odds to qualify for the Olympics, but then tore her ACL just over a week before the Games in a different crash. Somehow, Vaughn still found a way to compete, but just a few seconds into the run, her pole clipped a gate before a jump, sending her tumbling.

After she was airlifted out, an American did still take gold in the event, with Breezy Johnson winning Team USA's first medal of the Games and becoming only the second U.S. woman ever to win Olympic downhill gold, after Vaughn did it in 2010.
