Dominika Turkcan, from Mothers’ Day Movement joins Yo in this episode. The Mothers' Day Movement is an organization that grew out of a column in The New York Times by Nicholas Kristof, where he made the case for moving the apostrophe in Mother’s Day so it honors not just one mother, but underserved mothers everywhere. It advocates to shift a portion of Mother’s Day gift giving to a carefully selected charity each year in honor of the women or person they love. Since 2011, the group has raised over $850,000, in women's health, education, infant and maternal mortality, clean water, and human trafficking, and has been featured in The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and NPR. During the episode we explore the following questions with her: · What role did book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof have in starting the Mothers’ Day Movement? · How did Dominika come to join the Movement? · What are some of the projects the group has taken on? · What are results from these efforts? · Who is the beneficiary for 2021? Why were they chosen? · What are ways we can support your efforts? We hope you’ll enjoy this episode! Note: Around 15:00 there is some content that may not be appropriate for little ears.
