Chapter 3: What are the expectations for Mexico in the World Cup?
Adnan Virk from MLB Network joins us now on the Halford & Brough Show on Sportsnet 650. Good morning, Adnan. How are you? Mike, Jason, always a pleasure, fellas.
I had to at least experience the atmosphere of being afforded all those who are enjoying these Knicks games. Of course, they can't afford to take to the actual game. And I went with a buddy of mine, the great Scott Rogowski of HQ Trivia to Midtown Manhattan to watch the Knicks game. And of course, they're getting smokes. I said, all right, once it gets to half, let's just walk around a little bit.
The furthest you get to Madison Square Garden is about 36th Street.
Chapter 4: How is the Mexican team handling injuries before the World Cup?
It's a few blocks away, but heavily sectioned off, huge police presence, and just a preponderance of weed. That was the biggest thing. Everyone's high as a kite, and you're seeing very random Dikemi Mutombo Knicks jerseys and just a ton of cops. Eventually, Scotty goes, cops on the train, got to get to Brooklyn. And thank God, the great John Chick, my buddy texted me, hey, Nick's down by nine.
I'm like, what? So I dropped in the Celtic pub on 49th Street and it's rammed. Thanks to the guy, let's see it there. And I watched one of the craziest comebacks ever in the final two minutes when I walked in down by four. We all know those moments when we went to bed prematurely or we missed a moment like that. Thank God I didn't miss that moment.
What a hell of a game and what a play by OG Ananobi. And it's a great talk radio conversation, which you guys do expertly. The next day you say, hey, did the Knicks win or did the Spurs lose? And I'll tell you right now, the Spurs lost. What an epic choke job by them. How do you lose up by 29, fellas? Awful. That was an all-time meltdown. I want to ask you, though.
After you left the bar, when the game was over, what was it like on the streets of New York? I mean, it's pretty wild, man. In the bar itself, of course, everyone's high-fiving, hugging, screaming, revelry, etc. But even the buzz continues. When I got out of the bar, and again, Madison Square Garden is 33rd and 8th, I'm 10 blocks north. But again, it's a massive, sprawling city.
Chapter 5: What challenges does the U.S. team face in the World Cup?
Everyone's just screaming and whooping and hollering. It made me think, Bruff, This is the only team that this city would do it for. Like as many Yankees fans as there are, there's so many Mets fans, right? As many, you know, name it, Rangers, Alders, Devils. This city is split when it comes to Giants and Jets. But there's no Nets fans. Let's be honest. Nobody cares about the Nets.
This entire, you know, 8.8 million populace is cheering for the Knicks.
Chapter 6: What are the expectations for the U.S. team at the World Cup?
There is no Brooklyn Nets. Everyone loves the Knicks. And everyone's rooting for this team. So it's a wild time right now. I can't imagine. And think of the wild swing. I mean, the amount of muttering and utterances I heard that, oh, the Knicks are going to blow it. They were up 2-0. They're going to lose four straight. And now it's like, oh, they can't possibly lose. They're up 3-1.
San Antonio's going to egg all over their faces. Crazy. It's an unbelievable series. And I have no idea how it's going to end. I think the Knicks are going to win it. But... In the back of my mind, I could also see them blowing it. Okay, I want to ask you about, I don't know if you had time to watch the Jays game last night, but Max Scherzer returns from an injury. It does not go well.
Chapter 7: How do the groups of Canada and the U.S. compare?
He's 41 years old. I think his ERA is over 10 now.
He did get his 3,500th strikeout in the game. So there was a nice mark for him. But it came on a night where he got shelled.
But that also kind of tells the story. I was like, you have that many strikeouts? Hey, how long have you been in the league? And how much longer can you be in the league? Because right now, I don't know if the Jays can trust him given they need wins and he can't seem to get them.
You know, whenever there's a wide disparity in opinion you have with a buddy, like I remember when Scherzer got re-signed, I have a couple of Jay's friends were like, oh, my God, that's great. Are we talking about the same guy? And I go, oh, dude, he was great in the past. I go, he's 41 years of age. He's a shell of himself. One year, $3 million contract.
If you're telling me the $3 million is strictly for intangibles, like you just feel like he's almost going to be a pitching coach and he's there to rah-rah the guys and help with it. Okay, I'll buy that. But if anybody saw that contract, $3 million for one year, heavily incentivized, and said to themselves, oh, yeah, that's the number five starter. He'll be reliable for 20 to 25 starts.
No, you're dreaming. So I have been completely unsurprised at how ineffective he's been, whether or not he was hurt or not. He was gone for a while. He comes back, gets shelled. you obviously can't trust the guy. Like to me, it's such a foregone conclusion. Again, I was amazed at how effective he was in the postseason.
Like I thought he'd get shelled against the Dodgers and to his credit, guts, guile, competitiveness, et cetera. Like, you know, Max will do his best. Like, you know, they give you a four and a third, give up two runs.

Chapter 8: What dark horse teams could surprise in the World Cup?
I'm like, that was heroic for Max Scherzer at this point in his career. But to expect him over the course of the season, to be a reliable starter for you is completely foolish. So to me, it's completely unsurprising how bad he's been. As you said, an ERA north of 10. He's completely unreliable. To me, he's a $3 million cheerleader, period. And he's a future Hall of Famer.
He's an unbelievable athlete, great pitcher. I get it. But you can't tell me, if you're a competitor, this is a reliable option for you every fifth day. So right now, as it stands, Ponce done for the season. Barrios is done. You can rely on a few guys. See, thank God he's back. Looks phenomenal. Tons of strikeouts. The guy's been a great signing. Terrific by the Blue Jays. Gossman's very good.
And, of course, he salvages a young stud. You got three. And, by the way, they got rid of Eric Lauer, who was so good for them a series ago. He popped off about not liking the opener and being a bulk guy. The last time I checked, he's a two-and-a-half ERA and three starts so far with the Dodgers. He's been fantastic. I was like, what? You were so quick to jettison Eric Lauer.
I mean, Tim, you have two of five holes right now in your rotation.
I want to turn our attention to a couple of these other stories going around Major League Baseball that we haven't paid a ton of attention to. I do want to mention the Chicago White Sox, because every time we've mentioned them over the last couple of years in our hits with you, all we've done is talk about how wretchedly bad they are. They've lost 100 plus games in each of the last three seasons.
But you look at the standings, lo and behold, there are the White Sox atop the central half game lead over the Guardians this Really? The White Sox? Yeah, the White Sox are there. They sit alone. Now I've got a half-game lead atop the Central. I guess my question is, is this sustainable? Because it's still early days. It's only June 11th.
Yeah, it's convenient to point out just how putrid the American League is. Aside from the A's and the Rays, who are legitimate good teams, and the Mariners have finally waken up and they're going to win the West. I think it's fair point before I say anything to say, well, the American League stinks. There's four good teams.
But having said that, it is still shocking that the White Sox are above 500. I mean, this is a team that lost 121 games two years ago. And the fact that they're better, more wins than losses to me already is remarkable. I don't know if it's sustainable, particularly their pitching staff. Now, Davis Martin's been great. He's the best player nobody knows about.
He's been the ace of the White Sox and could be going to the All-Star game. That's how good he's been. And, of course, everyone knows Murataka Murakami because he came out with a buzz in the 20 home runs. But he's gone right now. So, like, the fact that they're still winning without Murakami, their best hitter, certainly in terms of power, is notable. They've been collecting good young players.
