Chapter 1: What is the Ashley Klein gambling drama about?
Welcome to Kenny Blitch, your daily hit of NRL news. I'm Paul Crawley with Paul Kent. How are you, mate?
Good, mate. Going well. Had an interesting round of rugby league to obviously set our eyes on over the weekend. And we've already been fighting all weekend, so we'll get through that today. But obviously the big mate is Ashley Klein, which I'm fascinated to have a chat about that.
I'm looking forward to it. Well, how do you see it, mate? A lot of people are talking about the fact that he should be stood down. There's no proof of him betting on rugby league games. Talk us through this.
Yeah, the interesting thing is, look, so for those coming in late, the NRL or the Herald released a story on, I think it was Friday it was, about Ashley Klein who had a gambling problem, $400,000 he'd done on the punt. The NRL investigated in 2019. They had another look again in 2023 when he put himself on an app called BetStop, which basically bans him from betting.
And he, as part of that investigation, told the NRL that he never bet on Rugby League. So the NRL had said in a statement. So the interesting thing is now it's caused, as you would expect, moral outrage across social media.

Chapter 2: How did the NRL handle Ashley Klein's gambling issues?
And everybody that's got a complaint about a referee has now pointed to Ashley Klein and said this is what ā wild accusations, all the rest of it. And he ā There's come under a lot of pressure, essentially, to be stood down from State of Origin 2, which he's going to officiate on Wednesday night. The fact is, he has not been accused of betting on rugby league games.
He's not admitted to betting on rugby league games.
Chapter 3: What moral outrage has arisen from the Klein situation?
And the NRL investigation says he has never bet on NRL games. And for that reason, they've got no reason to sit him down Wednesday night. I tend to agree with it, okay?
Chapter 4: What happened during the Origin wipeout over the weekend?
I know it's an unpopular call. I know a lot of fans are using their outrage to this as evidence. There's no evidence, but they're pretending it's evidence.
Chapter 5: How are the Broncos performing this season?
The accusation to them is enough evidence that he should be stood down, that he shouldn't be allowed to referee certain games. The fact is there's no evidence supporting the claims that he's ever been on rugby league, but it is a bad look for the game.
It's a bad look for the game.
Chapter 6: What led to Webster's blow-up regarding the refereeing?
But let's go back and break this down because the report said 2019 is when the NRL first became aware of it, right? Yeah. They did an investigation. It wasn't until 2023 that Klein registered on BetStop.
Yeah. And in 2019, Nick Weeks was the head of the integrity unit, which, you know, as everybody who watches this knows, I have a huge problem with the integrity unit. It's a propaganda unit as far as I'm concerned.
Chapter 7: How do gambling issues affect the integrity of rugby league?
And Todd Greenberg was the boss of the NRL. There's been a lot more from the NRL, a lot more focus put on that period than in 2023 when the people running the NRL were Andrew Abdo and Peter Vlandys. But what has also become...
known over the weekend is that his gambling actually got worse after 2019 until the NRL needed to step in in 2023, at which point Klein said he voluntarily put himself on that BetStop app and banned himself from gambling. So there's a lot here that's very cloudy.
Chapter 8: What changes are needed for the future of rugby league?
This is my issue. My issue is The integrity of the game deserves transparency. Now, I know this is Ashley Klein's business, okay, and people can argue that, but the fact also is when you choose to make your living in what is essentially a public space, such as Rugby League, you're just open for that. You're just open for that inspection from the wider audience.
It's not like an accountant working in some little anonymous office who has been misappropriating funds and it's nobody else's business. The other part to it is this innocent until proven guilty. Now, he's entitled to that, absolutely entitled to that. Where it gets cloudy again, though, is it is a public game, and it needs public faith.
And you need people's faith in the game, that the game is handling it responsibly and honestly. And with the NRL basically putting the shutters up and refusing to really divulge any details about it, Now, I think that the whole investigation should be made transparent. I think it should be actually published what the findings were.
Obviously, there would be parts of that that they can redact and black out, okay? But essentially, the NRL needs to show everybody how they investigated, how deeply they investigated, and why they came up with the decision they did. Because at the moment, there's a real ugly smell around
The gambling aspect of the game, the performance of referees, the lack of accountability for many of the decisions they're making, and it just continues to, I think, add to this whole narrative that something stinks in the state of Denmark.
See, I don't necessarily agree with this transparency aspect that you talk about. And I know you say this is a public game and people in private business are allowed to have their business kept private. But in the NRL, why should it be any different for the players as opposed to, like if players test positive to drugs within their club, To start with, their coach doesn't even know.
Their CEO doesn't even know. So why should a referee's business become public when, look, we've seen over time.
I think there's a difference there.
But we've seen over time, right, in the betting stakes that we've seen players' polls, we've heard players talk about the fact that there's just this ā outrageous amount of gambling addiction going on in the game. Like you go back two decades, mate, they were talking 50% of the players after a poll that said their teammates had some sort of gambling problem.
