Chapter 1: What happened at the Darwin Triple Crown?
I've been pretty vocal from day one that there's been differences spoken out on my podcast.
It was cool to have both the lucky dogs up there, though, right? And I thought we might see if the podcast is still going next week, actually, after this one.
Rightio, everyone. We're here for episode 32 of the Lucky Dogs podcast. And we have got the super sub on today that subbed in for Brodie on the weekend while he was sick. And thanks for coming on, Todd.
Thanks, mate. Yeah, the Brodie from Timi has arrived. I'm back. I'm subbing in for the sick BK. But yeah, keen to have a chat and recap the weekend. It was pretty crazy, wasn't it?
Yeah, crazy weekend. God, there was so much that happened.

Chapter 2: How did Todd Hazelwood prepare for his unexpected role?
I haven't seen a weekend like that in my whole career where people were getting subbed in and subbed out for obviously those illnesses. But yeah, we'll definitely get onto all that later. And what a mega job you did. But generally, you've been on this podcast before. You know how it works. We generally run through a bit of the entertaining stuff for...
I guess, stories that have happened away from the track over the last few weeks. And one of those big ones is Matt Payne. The statement about he was meant to go race NASCAR at Sonoma.
Yeah, exactly. Pretty massive headline, to be fair. And obviously being blocked from Ford and then obviously having that opportunity with GM. But I think that whole narrative was actually pretty messy behind the scenes. You know, statements coming out. I think that was probably, you know, obviously a massive opportunity for Matt.
Chapter 3: What challenges did drivers face during the Darwin race weekend?
Obviously, if that's something he wants to do, you know, he's missing out on a pretty cool gig. But I think, you know, that probably could have been handled probably a little bit better behind the scenes. What do you think?
Yeah, like... It's an interesting one, isn't it? I feel like I probably had this a little bit at Erebus. You know, I broke a contract there and had to race for, I think, about four or five rounds with the team, or maybe three or four rounds with the team towards the back half of 2023. And it's a bit of an awkward situation to be in. So, I don't know. I don't know. It was interesting.
It's a weird one. It's also weird that Chevrolet are obviously trying to get... You know, I'm sure there's plenty of people that they can...
put in that car around the world you know what i mean like not only supercar drivers there's plenty of opportunities out there to put someone in the in the bush car for sonoma so they're definitely working hard to get him that's for sure from what from what i can see
Yeah, exactly.

Chapter 4: How did sickness impact the drivers' performance?
And I guess from the Matt Pan camp, you think, well, if we can't do it with GM, use that as a bit of leverage to maybe open up another opportunity elsewhere and work with the team that you're with at the time. So, yeah, I was a bit bemused by it all, to be honest.
I thought, you know, obviously missing out on just a cool opportunity, which was a shame, but it is awesome for us, I guess, guys in Australia that we are getting that recognition that, you know, our services are wanted over on the big stage in the US. So, yeah. You know, hopefully Matty can get over there at some stage.
But yeah, I just thought the whole situation was very messy from the outside looking in. Created a lot of press and probably put a lot of pressure on Matt's shoulders as well.
But, you know, the good thing was obviously they come out and they made that statement in the lead up to the Supercar Weekend that he is signed on with Groves because there was a few other rumours going around because of that. So it's funny how one headline can all of a sudden create all this speculation behind the scenes.
Yeah, I'm kind of, like, impressed with how good of a job he's doing with all the noise behind the scenes. Like, I know we act like it doesn't affect us and you go, oh, you know, it wouldn't bother me even if this was all going on.
You know, you're working with crew, like, crew members that if, you know, if they think you're trying to leave the team or anything like that, like, they probably get a little bit, you know, unhappy, upset about it, which is completely fair. I remember that with Erebus. So, yeah, like, he, kudos to Matt because, God, he's performing and I'm sure there's something more behind the scenes, which...
Actually, if everyone's listening, make sure you listen next week to our next episode, because we've actually filmed an episode with Couchy before I'm heading over to Austria.

Chapter 5: What was the significance of Matt Payne's NASCAR opportunity?
And we got a little bit more detail from Couchy, who was at Groves, to try and find out a bit more about this whole, I guess, saga that's going on. But maybe also it's been blown up to be more than it is. But yeah, I think Chevy trying to put him in that Kyle Busch car is a bit cheeky by them. Yeah. maybe trying to stir the pot. Yeah, yeah.
It's impressive, isn't it, that they're actually what they're doing because when they, I don't know, when Triple Eight moved to Ford, we thought the GM might, you know, it was concerns as to whether GM were all like, oh, will they stay in the sport? And now they're really making some moves, man.
Yeah, exactly. They're putting their foot down and they're trying to get who they want. So I think it's cool for the sport. They're putting pressure on the drivers and the teams also to put their money where their mouth is as well. If they're genuine about looking after their drivers, they've got to step up to the plate and look after the guys they've got.
So yeah, I think it's cool for the sport. I always say when there's headlines and there's speculation, it gets people talking about what we're doing.
Chapter 6: How did the teams adapt to the heat and humidity in Darwin?
So even though there hasn't been much supercar racing this year, I feel like there's already been some big headlines behind the scenes. So It gets people talking about what we're doing and create some excitement. And as you said, you know, that excitement off track and then brew into something on track, whether that be an odd trading incident and it just snowballs.
Unfortunately, as a driver, it's never nice, but you know, it gets people talking about what we're doing.
Who do you think pays the bill? Like everyone's talking about this, you know, not saying Matt Payne, but everyone's talking about Chevy's willing to pay a lot of money to get a driver, you know, a new million dollar contract or something. I can't see just the teams paying that. Chevy would have to contribute, would they?
Oh, surely. I would guess. I don't know. I don't know the details. But, you know, if they're throwing that sort of money around, there's got to be some significant funding coming from somewhere. And I guess maybe that's a hint of that, you know, this is their first play from Shev's point of view, you know, trying to do a little bit of a backyard deal, put a bit of pressure on behind the scenes.
Chapter 7: What strategies did teams use during the races?
So maybe Chev is involved. So like you said, you know, it sort of felt like Chev were dwindling out of the sport and all of a sudden they've, I think now that, especially that they probably, to be fair, once they lost their, lost the deal with, with Red Bull Racing, I think they probably use that as motivation to go, well, geez, we need to get back on track. We need to make some moves.
So maybe that's where, you know, a bit of pressure is coming from. We all know that Simon McNamara is a pretty experienced, uh, man behind the scenes he probably loves to swindle a bit of a deal so yeah we'll see what happens in the future i guess but um yeah time will only tell i guess
I guess you can kind of lure drivers as well, not just with money, but at the end of the day, opportunity. Like, you know, a lot of us would probably take, you get to, you know, you get to a certain wage and you're probably going to take more of an opportunity. You know, if that's that you can go and race NASCAR a couple of times a year, it probably doesn't have to be that big of a contract.
So if they're trying to lure someone like Matt through offering NASCAR drives, well, I'm sure that's pretty exciting. For everyone, they would consider that.
Yeah, me included. Well, you know, Will, like you know yourself, like you get offered an opportunity that, you know, it's just so cool, it's unique, it's on the big stage. And I certainly know from a driver's point of view from my side, like if someone said, hey, let's go to the US, let's go NASCAR, you'd be all, hell yeah, like let's make it happen.
So, you know, when you get teased with these opportunities, it makes your head change a little bit.

Chapter 8: What are the implications of the new Gen 3 supercars on racing dynamics?
It makes your head spin, I think, more than anything else as well. So, yeah. Yeah, it's an interesting state of play.
Yeah, completely agree. And another Chevy driver that's extended, we saw on the... I think it was maybe just before the weekend, maybe on the Thursday, it was announced that Jaden O'Jade has extended his contract with Premier, which I think that's... I think that's completely deserved. I think he's really stepped up, qualified in the top 10 a few times, showing good race pace.
Jadon's, to be honest, Jadon's always been a good driver. You and I know that. We've seen him through junior categories, Super 2, all of that. He deserves to be on the grid. So it's cool to see that they've locked him down and sort of, you know, got some stability heading forward. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Declan. You know, it's always one of those things.
They lock down one driver and not the other. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens there.
Yeah, no, I think from Premier's point of view, I think it's a great state of play, you know, locking in the Juice. Yeah, Juice was actually my co-driver years ago and worked closely with him at Erebus recently.
But the fact that Juice is doing so much racing also outside of supercars, I think he's just keeping himself super sharp, making the most of every opportunity, which you're seeing out on track with the supercar stuff that he's doing. So, yeah, I think Juice is in a real healthy part of his career. You know, he's probably a bit unfortunate not to get a start in supercars,
earlier in his career, you know, you've tried really hard with wildcard programs and good co-driver opportunities, but just never broke through. So, but I also think for premier it's smart because they really haven't had a strong, not strong, but stable lineup from a driver point of view for a while. So maybe a little bit of that's come from Roland.
We all know that Roland has always been a big fan of the juice. So, um, Yeah, see what happens obviously with Decker. Decker's a great young kid. I've always been a big fan of Decker's work ethic and everything that he does. So unfortunately, I spun him around yesterday. We locked horns when I passed him yesterday and he came off second best. So this is my official apology to Decker.
Sorry, buddy. But yeah, hopefully he can also be on the grid next year. Be good to see him have another crack at it.
