Today I'm going to be addressing the big question that is currently being asked by so many people across Australia, given everything happening around the show right now. Is Married at First Sight Australia about to get cancelled?
Because that's what so many fans are fearing may happen, because irrespective of anything I'm covering on this podcast, there is currently both a police investigation and safe work New South Wales government investigation into the show and what's happening behind the scenes. And again, these things have nothing to do with me or what I'm looking at, despite people believing I'm the driving force.
These investigations were launched independently following complaints made against production by the cast members, and these investigations could drag on for a very long time. So while they're happening in the background, I asked one of the most in-the-know people in the Australian television industry, Rob McKnight, what does the future of this show look like?
And if you're not familiar with Rob's name, you'll definitely be familiar with his work because over the last 30 years, he's worked as a producer across seven, nine, and 10, and he's now a very well-known commentator. He launched website TV Black Box, and he basically knows this industry inside out with sources here, there, and everywhere.
So my first question to Rob was, well, how is this season rating?
Yeah, it's very simple, Josh. It's Married at First Sight first and Daylight second. Nothing even comes close to Married at First Sight except news-based programming. But we're talking about entertainment here. Married at First Sight is amazing. easily number one. On some nights, it can get as high as 1.4 million, but even on an average night, it could be 1.1, 1.2 million nationally.
I was then intrigued that, yeah, although maths has remained number one, has the negativity surrounding the season led to even the slightest drop in viewers?
It's interesting you ask that because there's been a lot of interest in it, but I haven't seen those big 1.4s in recent weeks. I just wonder whether there is a bit of fatigue because... I've got to be honest, I find it hard to keep following the show because it just goes on so long and it's so many nights a week.
Obviously, the dinner parties are a big draw cards for nine and they're the ones that really rate well. But I do think as it goes on, people are struggling to keep up with the various storylines. So I think there might be a bit of fatigue.
