Chapter 1: What special event is being celebrated in this episode?
What's good, everybody? J.E. Skeets of the No Dunks Podcast got something special for you today. 20 years ago to the day, we're talking January 11th, 2006. I sat down at a dining room table in an East Toronto apartment with Tass Mellis and JD to try and record a basketball podcast. We didn't know what we were doing. We didn't know what would become of the podcast.
We just pressed record and started talking hoops. Well, we have that show for you today. Now, again, this was a pilot episode. It never saw the light of day.
Chapter 2: What was the experience of recording the pilot episode like?
In fact, it wouldn't be until the following week on January 18th where we would premiere episode 001 of the Basketball Jones to the world. So in a way, this demo episode is some sort of weird NBA media history. And I'm going to warn you, It's horrible. It is a mess. It's a little rough around the edges. I can barely talk. I'm nervous as hell. There's a phone that starts ringing at one point.
JD doesn't have a goddamn mic when we're recording this, but it'll give you a sense of just how far we've come in the last 20 years. And the truth is, I think anything 20 years old is worth celebrating. So we're going to have a few more fun surprises planned for you a little later this month. But for now, let's take you back to the start.
After the break, the first ever recording of the Basketball Jones podcast. Enjoy. This is an iHeart podcast. Guaranteed human. A new year doesn't ask us to become someone new. It invites us back home to ourselves. I'm Mike Della Rocha, host of Sacred Lessons, a space for men to pause, reflect, and heal.
This year, we're talking honestly about mental health, relationships, and the patterns we're ready to release. If you're looking for clarity, connection, and healthier ways to show up in your life, Sacred Lessons is here for you. Listen to Sacred Lessons with Mike Della Rocha on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hola, I'm Jorge Ramos.
This week on The Moment, we take a look at Venezuela's uncertain future in a conversation with two people who have directly advised U.S. presidents. Juan Gonzalez during the Obama and Biden administrations. We're really good at invading countries. We're very bad at nation building. And Carlos Díaz-Rosillo during Trump's two terms.
I can guarantee you that nobody in the Trump administration likes Delcy Rodriguez. Listen to The Moment with Jorge Ramos and Paola Ramos on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, I'm Dr. Priyanka Wally. And I'm Hari Kundabolu. It's a new year, and on the podcast Health Stuff, we're resetting the way we talk about our health.
Which means being honest about what we know, what we don't know, and how messy it can all be. I like to sleep in late and sleep early. Is there a chronotype for that, or am I just depressed? Health Stuff is about learning, laughing, and feeling a little less alone. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey everybody, it's Michelle Williams, host of Checking In on the Black Effect Podcast Network. You know, we always say new year, new me, but real change starts on the inside. It starts with giving your mind and your spirit the same attention you give your goals. And on my podcast, we talk mental health, healing, growth, and everything you need to step into your next season whole and empowered.
New year, real you. Listen to Checking In with Michelle Williams from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You're listening to The Basketball Jones with J.E. Skeets and TASC. If you'd like to have your say, then give us a call on the Jones line, 416-519-4778.

Chapter 3: How did the hosts feel about the quality of the pilot episode?
Or email us at jones at thebasketballjones.net. And now, here are your hosts, J.E. Skeets and Taps Mellis. Wednesday, January 11th, 2006. It is the Basketball Jones. Oh yeah, we're here. Episode 0.1. I am J.E. Skeets, alongside me... Tass Mall is in the house here. Yeah. The guy that plays in the paint, puts his heart on his sleeve and I will be your floor general. There you go.
Pass first, pass second, shoot third. I'm Jay Skeets and with our producer here, Jason Doyle. All right. There he is. Um, yeah, we are the basketball Jones, our first show. And, uh, I guess we're going to try to keep you up to date in the past, uh, of the past week in the NBA, uh, just everything about the NBA. And, uh,
We're going to do that through a couple sections and a couple segments, actually. We're going to look back this week over the week that was. We're going to take a look at who is hot. Well, the Nets have been pretty hot lately. Oh, the Jazz Out West? We're going to talk about the Jazz Out West. We're going to get into a little bit of Ron Artest trade rumors. Ron Artest will never go away. No.
He shouldn't go away. No, he's too fun. He's a baller. You need characters like that in the NBA. We're going to get into that about possibly going to Golden State, a couple other places. We might get at the Pistons talk. Can they do 70 wins? Yes. Do you want to say now? Hold it. Yeah, we're going to hold it. Hold it. Keep it quiet. Suspense. We'll take a look at injuries.
It's a part of the game, Tass. You had some injuries on the slopes the other day, I believe. I'm still pretty battered and bruised. Yeah? You're on the day-to-day? Yeah, I'm a gamer. Okay, good. And, you know, we'll get into Raps Talk. We'll talk about the Raps. They started the week great and sort of ended the week bad. What a team. But, you know. Bad? Well, yes. Two losses is bad. Is it not?
It wasn't bad to me at all. Okay. And we have another little segment we're going to try it out called Crunch Time. And, you know, we're going to have a bit of a rapid-fire, I guess, PTI-like discussion. We'll have Jason shout out some topics, and we'll see what you think, what I think, and we'll argue and fight and stuff like that. Oh, yeah, we'll scrap it out. Okay, good.
And then we'll get to you. Anyway, we've got lots coming up. This is the Basketball Jones. If you want to get in touch with us, we'd love to hear from you. Hit us up. 416-519-4778. Or email jones at thebasketballjones.net. That's right. So we'll get into it right after a quick break. It's quick. It's quicker than a break. Let's just get this baby rolling. Let's do it. This is the Basketball Jones.
The Basketball Jones. We are here, live and direct. Live, not so much live. No, this is a podcast. Wherever you are, it's live. We're going to talk about this last week in basketball, because this is my favorite sport. I just can't help it. That's a good thing you're doing a podcast about it. Well, we got to start off with this past week with the two, I guess the two hottest teams.
Definitely the hottest team in the East and the hottest team in the West being the Nets and the Jazz, respectively. What are your thoughts on those? Let's talk about the Nets first. Yeah, okay. Because although they're hot, they really don't impress me. They do and they don't because... Vince is obviously going off and even a couple of other ones without RJ.

Chapter 4: What were the hottest NBA teams during the week discussed?
Oh, I do it in a heartbeat. I don't even think twice. If I'm Golden State, oh, I do it in a heartbeat. Ron Artest, we forget that Ron Artest is such a good player. He'll make an impact on both ends of the floor. He can be a motivational leader. He's not a rah-rah guy, but he will definitely bring people's games up. He is all heart and effort. You have to find the right fit for him.
He was definitely a cancer. That's what I was going to say. He makes an end on both ends of the floor. He makes an impact in the whole arena when he's jumping into the stands. Do you want someone like that, him being a superstar or not, around, especially Golden State, a fairly young team?
And do you want them turning to someone like Ron Artest, who has always, so far in his career, been great on the floor, but proven he doesn't really give a crap about his teammates, especially what he's done to the Indiana organization? After they stood by him after the brawl. Yep. And then just literally turn his back on them. I agree with you. I agree with you to a point.
I think if you're going to State, you have to take a chance. And they haven't had a winning team in a real long time. You need some toughness on that team. You've got extremely talented players in Jay Rich, in Baron Davis, even Troy Murphy or Ike Diogo. But you need some sort of toughness to your team. You need to get hard.
You need to be able to go through a season and go through the droughts of January and February games and And just have somebody to take you through the tough times. And I think Ron Artest can be that guy. He can light a fighter under a guy's butts, and he'll get them there. Okay. Well, Chris Mullen took a chance on Baron Davis last year, so maybe we'll see it again.
What do you think about the Clippers? Possibility right now the talks are Maggette for Artest. Straight up, by the sounds of it. I like it even more than the Golden State situation, actually. For the Clippers? Yeah, for the Clippers. I guess for the Pacers, too. I mean, that's a... That's a decent part. Corey McGeady's a decent part. I think we got a call. who were ringing off the hook.
Sorry, keep going. No, I don't know. I'm not a big Corey Maggette fan. I'll never like him. He's a totally one-way player. And I just, you know, we're talking Ron Artest here. All right. We're talking Ron Artest. You want to shut somebody down in a playoff series? You put Ron Artest on them. You want an extra bucket in a playoff series? Give the ball to Ron Artest.
You know, we're talking Corey Maggette here. Yeah, he can score. You want a rap album produced. Yeah. You get Ron Artest. We'll talk about the raps coming up soon. All the raps. You need some water in you. Best team in basketball. You're really worked up over Ron Artest there. You're really worked up. I'll take Ron Artest for half of the superstars in the NBA. Trade Kevin Garnett for Ron Artest.
I'll take him. Wow. Okay, I'm just kidding, but. All right, well, we're going to get into the Raps talk here. We'll talk about Mike James. Bitch. Yeah, and the week that was for the Raptors right after the break. All right. Every January, we're encouraged to start over. But what if this year is about slowing down and learning how to understand ourselves more deeply?

Chapter 5: What are the trade rumors surrounding Ron Artest?
You gonna pay him? I wouldn't trade him for on our test. Oh, you wouldn't, eh? No. He had some girth, didn't he? Yeah, too bad he never made anything of himself. I thought he'd be good in Orlando. John Amici? No way. Pat Burke took his spot. Yeah, here it is. Ladies and gentlemen, the wanker of the week. Alright, Lanker of the Week.
Basically, we're going to take someone from the past week and we're going to appoint them. With the wanker of the week, Tess, who is this week's wanker? I think you can call this guy wanker of the season so far. Mr. Peja Stojakovic out in Sacramento. I just had enough of that guy.
If you want to talk about who could have taken his free agent value to another level, Peja Stojakovic is a free agent this year, and it's just been horrible. Yeah, he's been in and out of the lineup, but that's one guy I don't sign. Because he's a wanker because he doesn't play hard. He's not a team guy. Total stats guy. All about himself. Not a winner, in my opinion. I just had enough Pagia.
I don't want to hear about him. If they train for Ron Artest, if you could get Ron Artest for Pagia, that is a steal. There it is. Pagia Stojakovic, you are our first annual wanker. Don't you agree? I agree, definitely. I hate him. Yeah, I'm not a player. You just crush a lot. What? Nothing. Well, we're wrapping it up. You like that? Big pun, big pun. It's getting late for you.
