Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh.
Chapter 2: What key events occurred during President Trump's State of the Union address?
President Trump is heading to Texas, home to two key Republicans at last night's State of the Union, Senator John Cornyn and his primary rival Ken Paxton.
It's also the home state of Democratic Representative Al Green, who was kicked out after holding up a sign to protest a racist post on Trump's social media account earlier this month that depicted former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama as apes. President Trump delivered a wide-ranging and record-long speech. NPR's Deepa Shivaram has details.
Trump chided Democratic lawmakers for not applauding along with their Republican colleagues. But Trump did get applause from across the aisle when he mentioned support for a bill that would ban members of Congress from insider trading. He also said that next year, people whose employers do not offer a match for retirement contributions... will get up to $1,000.
My administration will give these often forgotten American workers, great people, the people that built our country, access to the same type of retirement plan offered to every federal worker.
Other parts of Trump's speech were more divisive, particularly on the issue of immigration and border security. At one point, the president accused Democrats of, quote, destroying the country. Deepa Shivaram, NPR News, Washington.
In the Democratic Party's rebuttal, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger targeted Trump's hardline immigration crackdown. Our president has sent poorly trained federal agents into our cities where they have arrested and detained American citizens and people who aspire to be Americans. And they have done it without a warrant.
Vaccine skepticism is among the concerns being raised at today's Senate confirmation hearing for wellness influencer Dr. Casey Means. She was tapped for a U.S. Surgeon General. The U.S. Embassy in Israel says it will be operating consular services for the first time in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israel praised the move as historic. NPR's Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv.
The U.S. embassy says its consular officers will visit two Israeli settlements in the West Bank for one-day visits each to provide passport services to settlers with U.S. citizenship. Israel's foreign ministry called it an historic decision and thanked U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee. It's a symbolic U.S. endorsement of Israeli control over occupied land that Palestinians want for a future country.
But the move comes amid anger by 14 Arab countries over Huckabee's recent interview to talk show host Tucker Carlson. Huckabee said West Bank settlement areas are Israel. There's been a recent rash of Israeli settler attacks in the West Bank, torching Palestinian property and a mosque. Daniel Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv.
