Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Sunday's peace talks in Switzerland were productive in efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
Over the last 96 hours or more, there's been extensive engagement with the Ukrainian side, including our Secretary of the Army and others, being on the ground in Kiev, meeting with relevant stakeholders across the Ukrainian political spectrum in the legislative branch and the executive branch and the military and others to further sort of narrow these points.
Speaking in Geneva, Rubio also emphasized that any final deal must be approved by the presidents of Russia and Ukraine.
Chapter 2: What were the outcomes of the recent peace talks in Switzerland regarding Ukraine?
The discussion centered on a controversial plan originally drafted by the U.S. and Russian negotiators and widely criticized as favorable to Moscow. Under pressure, the Trump administration says the draft is now being revised to address Ukraine's key demands, firm security guarantees and no-force NATO exclusion. The United Nations Climate Conference wrapped up in Brazil this weekend.
NPR's Julia Simon reports the final agreement did not address the main driver of climate change. But one of the most important things to happen at the COP30 conference was the announcement of a new conference specifically dedicated to phasing out fossil fuels.
Colombia and the Netherlands will co-host. Sophie Hermans, climate minister of the Netherlands, says it will help countries achieve the climate goals they agreed to 10 years ago. That's something that I've said in the past, I say it today. On the economy and affordability, Mamdani says he and Trump found common ground. I found in the meeting that I had with the president a productive one and a meeting that came back again and again to the central themes of the campaign that we ran.
Trump's top economic advisor, Kevin Hassett, tells CNN the president no longer wants to act on his threat to curb federal funding from New York City. Well, it feels like he doesn't mean it now. And I guess we'll have to wait and see what Mamdani does. Hassett says the White House was reassured by Mamdani's choice to retain the current police commissioner, Jessica Tisch.
