Chapter 1: What happened at the memorial service for Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom?

1.364 - 21.767 Louise Schiavone

Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Louise Schiavone. Mourners wept for U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom Friday at a memorial service in her hometown of Western Springs, West Virginia. She was gunned down in an ambush along with a fellow West Virginia National Guardsman, Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who is in critical condition.

And Afghan Asai Lee, who authorities charged had driven across country to Washington, D.C. for the attack, is now facing first-degree murder charges. The Trump administration has been lashing out against immigrants in the U.S. following the shooting, and PR's Vanessa Romo has the latest.

In a post, the president said his administration would, quote, end all federal benefits and subsidies to non-citizens and remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States. He also falsely alleged that refugee burden is the leading cause of social dysfunction in America.

He went on to blame immigrants for crime and using federal benefits, and he called out legal green card holders for getting government support. Trump promised to permanently pause migration from what he called third world countries. Vanessa Romo, NPR News.

Airbus is ordering an immediate software fix for thousands of its A320 series jets. As NPR's Sarah Ventry reports, the company has released a statement saying strong solar radiation can corrupt data used by flight control systems.

On October 30th, a JetBlue flight abruptly lost altitude while flying from Cancun, Mexico to Newark, New Jersey. Several passengers were injured. Airbus now says that this was likely the result of intense solar radiation corrupting data critical to the functioning of flight controls.

Now, those systems will need to be updated in order to fly safely, which could cause major delays and cancellations during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The Airbus A320 family of airplanes is now the most used aircraft in the world. According to aviation analytics company Sirium, more than 9,000 of those planes are in use. Sarah Ventry, NPR News.

Black Friday brought shopping malls to life in Metairie, Louisiana. Outside New Orleans, Lakeside Shopping Center was crowded. Denise Thevnot said that for her family, Black Friday shopping is a holiday tradition.

Chapter 2: How is the Trump administration responding to the recent shooting incident?

177.747 - 199.224 Louise Schiavone

This is NPR News in Washington. The deadly fire in a massive apartment building complex in Hong Kong has raised questions about a common practice among builders and renovators in Asia, bamboo scaffolding. Bamboo is a favorite material because it's lightweight and cheap, but there are questions about its role in the rapid spread of that fire.

Officials say other flammable materials also found at the site, like plastic netting and foam panels, are also under investigation today. The death toll is now at least 128 after firefighters located dozens more bodies in the charred structure. Gushing floods and mudslides in the island of Sri Lanka have caused the deaths of more than 130 people and just as many people are missing.

The heavy rushes of water soften the soil in Sri Lanka's central hill country, triggering mudslides, and there's fears that more people are buried beneath the mud. Downstream, homes, fields and roads are flooded. So have reservoirs and rivers. Trees have fallen on roads and railway tracks, paralysing movement. Rescuers were using helicopters to airlift some trapped residents.

Neighbouring India has dispatched search and rescue teams and sent aid to support the country. Sri Lanka experiences an annual monsoon which brings torrential rain, but climate change has made those downpours more erratic and extreme. Diya Hadid, NPR News, Mumbai.

Monsoon rains have also hit hard in parts of north Sumatra, Indonesia, with rescue workers responding to deadly landslides and flash floods. I'm Louise Schiavone, NPR News, Washington.
