What is the Jeremiah vs. Conrad debate and why does Joss weigh in on it?

Morgann Book 0:06
Hi everyone, welcome back to Off the Shelf. Today's guest is the author behind one of my all-time favorite second chance romance books. So much that I went on a debate show here in Canada called Canada Reads and tried to convince a bunch of people that this was the book that all of Canadians should read. And this year she's back with a brand new release: Let's Kiss and Tell, Joss Richard. Welcome back to Off the Show. Thank you so
Joss Richard 0:28
much. much. I feel like it's been probably a month since I've got
Morgann Book 0:33
it's almost been a year, which is crazy. Which is crazy. I know. Now you're here, you're back again to clear the air. Gotta ask you something. Um why Did you like Jeremiah in episode one of the summer I turned pretty? And what happened when you took that claim to threads? Oh my god. Okay, we're coming in with the hard hitting question. I figured we'd just get it off the table. Did you see that? No, but I saw you talking about it. I didn't see the claim.
Joss Richard 1:01
Girl, okay. I would just like to say, I have never watched The Summer I Turn Pretty. I didn't know a thing about it. I I obviously knew what the show was. I didn't read the books. I didn't know what happens. I thought, okay, I'm gonna start watching it. I watch one episode. And all I say is Okay, it was kind of a it was a pretty big remark, but I was saying, I don't know what happens in this show, but I want Jeremiah and Belly to live happily ever after. And they came after me. Yeah. I had no idea. I had to message my friends. I was like, wait, what happens on this? What did I say? What did I say? What does he do? Like, does he kill anyone? Like I was so scared. They were really upset. Yeah. They were really upset.
Joss Richard 1:47
I thought I was gonna be canceled.
Morgann Book 1:48
I kinda was for a day. I mean, I didn't see it. I saw you talking about it on Substack.
Joss Richard 1:53
Yeah. But
Morgann Book 1:54
I didn't come across it on threads. You're good. Did you watch the Summer I Turn Play? I did. Okay. And I I
Joss Richard 2:00
watched one episode. One episode by the way. Yeah.
Morgann Book 2:03
And Listen, like Jeremiah is the like no one not no one, I would say Everyone leans towards Conrad.
Joss Richard 2:12
Yes, my thing not me doubling down on it, but my my thing is when I have a romance, I like to go through the journey with the main character. and be with them when they fall in love with the male main character. You know what I mean? Got it. With the Samurai Turn Purdy, I feel like we were handed on a silver platter, Conrad, and she was already in love with him. And I was thinking, Well, I don't know their backstory. You're telling me that she loves him, but I don't I haven't gone on that journey with her. So I thought Jeremiah was the underdog and we were gonna go on this like friends to lovers journey. Boy was I wrong. So we haven't you have not continued. I stopped at season three.

Why do authors need a life outside of writing, according to Joss?

Morgann Book 2:58
Oh season one. Okay. Which is when things I might recommend, yeah. Let's go maybe one t one and two maybe will get you to delete that thread. Anyway, so I found that on your Substack, which has a brilliant name, by the way, just because which I know comes from your blog. But in your Substack, you talk about how you've realized and learned um how important it is to have a life outside of being an author. What made you come to that realization and what are some things you do in your life to achieve that?
Joss Richard 3:30
Oh that's a good question. I mean I it hit me one. like peak it's different this time promotion that being an author was my entire life and all I could talk about was the book. And which makes sense because I mean it was a new chapter in my life a literal new chapter in my life. But every time I would see friends and family it was always about the book. Anytime someone was like What's going on? Or what are you up to? It's like, oh, I'm writing, I'm promoting, I have an event, and I just felt like I didn't have a personality. outside of being an author which is So I'm so grateful and it's so lovely, but I realized that when I would wake up and I would check my social media or all I was thinking of was how do I promote the book, that it was
Joss Richard 4:15
A little It wasn't healthy. Do you know what I mean? So I think that understanding that I have interests and
